WILDERNESS SOCIETY CHIEF TO VISIT

ENTERPRISE The president of The Wilderness Society will talk about the future of Hells Canyon during a celebration Friday near Buckhorn in Wallowa County.

William Meadows, who heads the wilderness organization based in Washington, D.C., will give the keynote address for a 25th anniversary celebration of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.

The event, organized and sponsored by the Hells Canyon Preservation Council, will begin at 11 a.m. with a raising of a long house provided by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

Talks will begin at 2 p.m. and Meadows will speak at 4:50. Ric Bailey, director of the preservation council, will discuss the Hells Canyon-Chief Joseph National Preserve.

Meadows, who has been the Wilderness Societys chief executive since 1997, will not present any plans for legislation, said Chris Arthur, senior associate for the society.

Hell raise questions, and say that we need to do better. Hell ask about boundary changes, and possible changes in management look to see if there is a better agency to manage, Arthur said.

The Wilderness Society was involved in the creation of the Hells Canyon NRA more than 25 years ago.

The anniversary event is open to the public, but registration is requested. To register and for directions to the ceremony call Juanette at 963-3950.
