WOODCUTTING MISHAP CLAIMS ELGIN MAN, 24
ELGIN An Elgin man died quickly late Monday afternoon when the top of a tree he was falling broke wrong and fell on him.
County sheriff deputies were called to the end of Hindman Road south of Highway 82 northeast of Elgin just after 5:30 p.m.
A man had called from a residence along Hindman Road to report his woodcutting partner, Brian Kelly Chandler, 24, had been hit and was down under a tree.
He was falling a tree, and it fell into another tree. Then the top of the one he was falling broke off and came down and hit him in the head, said Deputy Sheriff Chuck Anderson. Chandlers partner went for help.
Anderson said that there were attempts to revive Chandler at the scene, but they were unsuccessful.
Chandlers death was a classic accident, Anderson said. According to the sheriffs report, Chandler was out cutting wood for his own use and to sell.
He lived with his wife, Leslie, and children, a 4-year-old and a 9-month-old baby, in Elgin. A service for him will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at Harvester Nazarene Church in Elgin.
A fund has been set up at U.S. Bank in Elgin to help the family with expenses.
He was really well-liked out there in the community, Anderson said of Chandler.
