Wild winds - 88 mph gust recorded in Joseph

Mighty winds blew through Northeast Oregon Monday night and early this morning, sending debris flying through the air but apparently causing no injuries. For velocity, the windiest place in the region was Joseph in Wallowa County, where gusts up to 88 mph were reported overnight to the National Weather Service. Power to parts of Joseph went out about 4:30 a.m., and had not been restored by 10 a.m. today, according to a spokeswoman at Joseph City Hall. In Union County, gusts were measured at 60 mph near North Powder, with sustained winds at 40-44 mph. A station near Union reported gusts ups to 51 mph, with sustained winds blowing between 42-51.No damage reports from Wallowa County were available at press time. In Union County, it appears damage was light. Power stayed on throughout Union County, except for one small outage involving about 75 customers on Peach, Foothill, Pierce and Hot Lake roads. The outage lasted about an hour. No storm-related injuries have been reported. A high wind warning from the National Weather Service stays in effect until 4 p.m. today. A high wind warning is issued when winds are expected to be 40 mph or greater with gusts in excess of 58 mph. People venturing outdoors should be cautious of and alert for flying debris. Driving may also be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
