Youth to take break in Mexico
Nine La Grande high school students are hoping to turn a taco fund-raiser in March into a trip to Mexico later that month.
Members of La Grandes Campus Life Youth for Christ group will be traveling to Mexico during spring break for a five-day mission trip in Ensenada, about 50 miles south of Tijuana.
Theyll be holding an all-you-can-eat taco bar and dessert from 6 to 8 p.m. March 4 at Valley Fellowship (the old armory), 507 Palmer Ave.
The cost will be $5 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under.
Cally Goss, executive director of Eastern Oregon Youth for Christ, said the group hopes to raise enough funds during its Fiesta Fund-raiser to supplement the money the students are collecting themselves toward the $400 cost of the trip.
Community development, mission work
While in Ensenada, the students will be involved in a number of community development projects, such as orphanage work with children, church building projects and ministry work with street children, Goss said.
The needs of many of the people in Mexico are great, she said.
The group will be connecting with a local pastor to assist him with his church work.
Goss said members of the Campus Life group from La Grande that went to Mexico last March were strengthened in their faith and had a new desire to serve others.
The mission trip gives the students the chance to get their eyes off themselves and learn to give to others.
Goss said this years group will be connected with Youth With a Mission, an international Christian missionary organization.
YWAM will supply the cooks and food, bring in drinking water and provide translators.
Goss expects that other youth missionary groups from the United States will be in Ensenada during the week.
The $400 fee will pay for transportation, lodging and food in Mexico.
Goss said the money will be a stretch for some students to raise.
But its possible. If we have to do bottle drives more than once, well do that, she said.
Goss said she has room for three more students on the trip. Participants can be from high schools outside of La Grande. Goss and two other adults will be chaperones.
The group will leave Union County on March 22 and return on March 31, stopping overnight in California on the way down and on the return trip.
People who would like to help support a participant can write to Mexico Trip, P.O. Box 1, La Grande, or they can call 963-4190.
Fiesta Fund-raiser tickets are available by calling that number.
