OBITUARIES FOR AUGUST 11 - 16, 2003

Ray Wortman

Elgin

Raymond Wortman, 81, of Elgin died Aug. 7 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A dedication of the grave will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Island City Cemetery.

A full obituary will be published later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Ray Wortman

Elgin

1922-2003

Raymond Wortman, 81, of Elgin, died Aug. 7 at Grande Ronde Hospital. Dedication of the grave will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at the Island City Cemetery.

Mr. Wortman was born on Feb. 25, 1922, the son of Charles and Virginia Carper Wortman in Enterprise. He attended school in Promise and served with the Navy during World War II.

On Aug. 19, 1968, he married Nancy Wiglesworth in Pendleton. He worked in the logging industry until an accident forced his retirement. They moved to Elgin in 1970.

Mr. Wortman was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed reading and family outings. Prior to his accident he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Wortman of Elgin; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Tim Jordan of Union; stepchildren, Sherry Jones of Portland, Elmer and Sharon Emmons of Pendleton, Judy and Richard Clark of La Grande and Rodney and Frieda Emmons of Portland; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Bernard Wortman of Kooskia, Idaho, Ersel Wortman of Wallowa and Wes Wortman of Kelso, Wash.; sister, Mervene Hardy of Elgin; and other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the Family History Center, 2504 N. Fir St., La Grande 97850.

Monty Townsen

La Grande

1916-2003

Montague Columbus "Monty" Townsen of La Grande died Aug. 9 at an adult foster home. He was 86.

A celebration of life will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at the Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 4th St. Officiating will be Pastor Wilfred Nitz of the Faith Lutheran Church. Friends may call for viewing between 10 a.m. and noon Thursday in the Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Townsen was born Oct. 28, 1916, to Jesse and Flora Brown Townsen in Dallas, Texas. He married Dorothy Veale Tomlinson in 1938. Following her death, he married Ida Mae Clymer in 1971. He worked in the payroll department in the city of Dallas for more than 40 years.

He and his wife moved to

La Grande in 1999 to be nearer family. Monty enjoyed traveling, and in his later years, went out weekly on the Community Connection bus.

He is survived by his wife, Ida of La Grande, his stepsons and their wives, John Clymer and Joanne Druist of La Grande and James and Paula Clymer of Huntington Beach, Calif.

A granddaughter and a great-granddaughter also survive. His brother, Jack Townsen, died in 1996.

Minnie Thompson

Minnie Thompson of La Grande died Monday in a local care center. She was 94. Funeral services are pending, and a full obituary will follow. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Geneva Brady

Union

1919-2003

Geneva "Ginny'' Mariann Brady, 83, of Union died July 26 at Grande Ronde Hospital following a short illness.

A memorial service will start at 5 p.m. on Aug. 24 at the Union Baptist Church, 1531 Main St.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Brady was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Piggot, Ark., the youngest of seven children.

Her father, Eugene Langley, was a farmer and preceded her mother, Elizabeth, in death. Her mother suffered from blindness as a result of diabetes. Ginny Brady cared for the other children and her mother.

She married James A. Brady on March 15, 1947, in Yuma, Ariz. She cared for her three stepchildren and Jim, and received her GED in 1969.

She had worked for Westinghouse and O'Keiff & Merrit among others before she and Jim moved to Union. She worked as a nurse's aide at the St. Joseph Hospital in La Grande, where she shared her compassionate spirit.

She was a member of the Union Baptist Church and enjoyed staying in contact with many people through her telephone ministry.

Her husband, James, died earlier.

Minnie Thompson

La Grande

1908-2003

Minnie Lee Thompson, 95, of La Grande died Aug. 11 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Grandview Cemetery with the

Rev. Janet Ferrell of the United Methodist Church officiating. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thompson was born May 19, 1908, to James and Fannie McBee in Ozona, Texas. She married Charles R. Thompson, and the couple moved to

La Grande in 1946. She was a homemaker and accomplished seamstress. She had been a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Arnold and Mary Thompson of La Grande and two grandchildren. Her husband, a son, Robert, a sister and seven brothers all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to any charity.

‘Jack' Jewell

Formerly of La Grande

1928-2003

John R. "Jack" Jewell, 74, of Juneau, Alaska, and formerly of La Grande died Aug. 6 at the V.A. Hospital in Seattle. A private memorial service was held at St. Brendan's Episcopal Church in Juneau.

Mr. Jewell was born Nov. 8, 1928, in Wallowa. He served in the Air Force from 1947 to 1950 and married Dollie Johnson. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1956. The family lived in Idaho and Oregon for many years before moving to Juneau in 1987.

He was a member of the Eagles and was past worthy president of the La Grande aerie. He helped found the Juneau aerie and served there with distinction. He was on the advisory board of the Juneau Senior Citizen Center and enjoyed working with his hands, providing advice for his family and friends from plumbing to sewing. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include children, Carol Graham, Elizabeth Landvatter and Laurel Carlton, all of Juneau, Barbara Druesedow of Nikiski, Alaska, and Leslie Frey of Eagle River, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy Parrish of Juneau, an aunt, Inez McCrae of Wallowa, sisters-in-law, Lorraine Sasser of Wallowa and Ilona Johnson of Eugene, and other relatives. His wife died earlier.
