Violet Irene Augenstein

Violet Irene Augenstein, 94, of La Grande died today at Grande Ronde Hospital.

Grays West Chapel of Baker City is in charge of arrangements. An obituary will be published later

Erman Bell

Erman Bell, 89, died Saturday at his home in La Grande.

Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Dorothy Cross

Dorothy Cross, 95, of La Grande died this morning at a local care facility.

Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Jerry Doud

Jerry Doud, 54, of La Grande died this morning at Grande Ronde Hospital.

Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Dorothy Cross

La Grande

1906-2001

Dorothy Bertelle Cross, 95, of La Grande died Monday at a local care center.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Summerville Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Miller of Valley Fellowship officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande.

Mrs. Cross was born June 3, 1906, to David and Minnie Stevens Wink in Walla Walla. When she was 6, her family moved to Elgin, where she became class president and valedictorian of her 1924 high school class.

She taught one term of school at Catherine Creek, near Union.

She married Walter Cross in Elgin on June 14, 1925, and they lived in logging camps near Wallowa and Enterprise for three years, where he cut logs with a crosscut saw and drove a logging team of horses.

After that, they rented a farm on Pumpkin Ridge for five years before moving back to Elgin in 1934. Mr. Cross died April 26, 1981.

Mrs. Cross liked flowers and gardening and always had a pretty yard. She liked to travel.

Survivors include her son, Raymond Cross of Elgin; a daughter, Beverly Horton of Mesa, Ariz.; three granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and other

relatives. An infant brother died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Oregon Heart Association in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Irene Augenstein

North Powder

1906-2001

Irene Augenstein, 94, of North Powder, died Aug. 27. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel, 123 S. Seventh St., in Cottage Grove. A private burial will be in Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.

Mrs. Augenstein was born Sept. 2, 1906, to Ira James and Sarah Jane West Calvert in Wendling. She married Seth Hollis, and after his death in 1937 she married Jim Augenstein on June 21, 1941, in Eugene. She spent most of her life in Goshen and Cottage Grove, moving to Baker City in 1992 to be near family and then to foster care in North Powder. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, flowers and sewing. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Cottage Grove.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Del and Ruth Hollis of Klamath Falls, Gwen Yeager of Owosso, Mich., Jan and Jack Durflinger of Baker City, and Laureen Purkey of Port Orford; 15 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Both husbands, two sons, Harold Hollis Sr. and Jimmy Augenstein, a daughter, Dorothy Mills, two grandchildren, a sister and a brother all died earlier.

Jerry Doud

La Grande

1947-2001

Jerry Lee Doud, 54, of La Grande, died Aug. 27 at Grande Ronde Hospital after a long illness. At his request there will be no public service. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Doud was born Jan. 20, 1947, to Archie and Irene Craig Doud in La Grande. He graduated from Imbler High School in 1965 and served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He worked in the timber industry and as a truck driver. He married Sheila Underwood on July 11, 2001, in Walla Walla. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 223 and the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife and his father, both of La Grande; a brother, Gerald Doud of Elgin; and a sister, Lula Mae Boyer of Boise. His mother died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Oregon Cancer Society in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Erman Bell

La Grande and formerly

of Union

1912-2001

Erman Bell, 89, of La Grande, died Aug. 25 at his home. At his request, there will be no public service. A private burial will be at the Haines Cemetery.

Mr. Bell was born May 30, 1912, to Alfred and Ethel Gray Bell in Rock Creek. He attended school in Haines and married Leona Hearing. He worked as a mechanic for the state of Oregon shops in

La Grande. He lived in Union for many years before moving to

La Grande two years ago. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include a daughter, Dawn Vedder of Spokane; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Dufour of Salem; and other

relatives.

His wife, two sisters and a brother all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Oregon Cancer Society or Grande Ronde Hospital Home Care Services in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Victor Neiger

Formerly of Cove

1905 - 2001

Victor O. Neiger, 96, of Baker City and formerly of Cove, died Aug. 27 at his home.

A vigil service will begin at 7 tonight at St. Francis deSales Cathedral in Baker City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the cathedral with the Most Rev. Elden Curtiss, Archbishop of Omaha, and Rev. John Jasper of St. Francis deSales Cathedral officiating.

Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Viewing will continue until 5 p.m. today at Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City.

Mr. Neiger was born March 20, 1905, in Trzic, Slovenia. The family came to Wyoming in 1912 and in 1919 to Cove.

He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934, and on May 22, 1937, he married Helen Guyer in Weiser, Idaho.

He owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Baker City and served in the Army during World War II.

After the war, he worked for the California-Pacific Utility Co. for 18 years until his retirement.

He enjoyed the mountains, fishing, camping with his family, playing baseball, swimming, boxing and singing.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Corrine Blair of Corvallis, Richard and Kathy Neiger of Germany, and Sherry and Rick Davidson of Beaverton; six grandchildren; a brother, William Neiger of Portland; sisters, Oberta Lich of California and Marcella Smith of Bend; and other relatives.

His wife, two sisters, Christina and Mary, and a baby brother, Guito, all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice in care of Coles-Strommer Funeral Home (97814).

Donald D. Parker

Donald D. Parker, 61, of Cove, died Friday at Grande Ronde Hospital. Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements. A full obituary will be published later.
