Virginia Cornelius

A memorial service for former La Grande resident Virginia Cornelius, 69, of Huntington will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Huntington Christian Center, 595 E. Madison.

Mrs. Cornelius died Dec. 14. Arrangements are under the direction of Haren-Wood Funeral Chapel of Ontario.

Raymond J. Mike Monroe

Raymond Joseph Mike Monroe, 99, of Cove and formerly of Summerville, died Tuesday at a care home in Cove. A complete obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

William A. McEwen

Formerly of La Grande

1909-2001

William Antone Tony McEwen, formerly of La Grande, died Oct. 25 in Ogden, Utah., at the age of 92.

He was born Aug. 13, 1909, in Burley, Idaho, to William Riley McEwen and Pearl Griffith McEwen.

The family moved to La Grande, where during and following his high school years Tony was a mainstay of the family through the long illness of his father and the rigors of the Depression.

Tony graduated from La Grande High School in 1929, then worked at a number of jobs, including service with the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He married Ruth Garrick of La Grande in 1938 and embarked on a successful career in insurance in which he was a frequent member of his companys Million Dollar Club. He and Ruth were long-time residents of San Bernardino, Calif.

He was a prominent member of the Lions Club and other civic organizations of San Bernardino.

Mr. McEwen is survived by his sister, Peggy McEwen Slaughter and husband Wesley of Walla Walla; his brother-in-law, Paul Walden of Hood River; his cousin, Nile Barraclough and wife Betty, formerly of La Grande and now of Santa Clara, Calif.; his sister-in-law, Elise McEwen of San Bernardino; a daughter, Myrna Christensen of Utah; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

His first wife, Ruth Garrick McEwen, died in 1985; he subsequently married Ruth Kilpack, formerly of La Grande, who died in 1995. Brothers Kermit, Trulock, and Ray McEwen, and a sister, Betty McEwen Walden, died earlier.

Karma Marie Treat

La Grande

1924-2001

Karma Marie Treat, 77, a successful American Kennel Club dog breeder before moving to La Grande, died Dec. 23 at a local care center.

She requested that there be no public service.

Mrs. Treat was born Jan. 19, 1924, to Niels Christian and Sine Overgaard Nielsen in Des Moines, Iowa. The family later moved to Santa Barbara, Calif.

She was confirmed into Trinity Lutheran Church on June 5, 1938.

She attended Santa Barbara College for a year and met Ira Eugene Treat. They married on Jan. 22, 1943. He died in Boise in 1972. She settled in California before moving to Oregon.

Mrs. Treat is survived by two sons, John C. of Reno, Nev., and Wayne E. of California; a daughter, Kristine M. Neal of La Grande; a sister, Dixi McCauley of Arizona; five grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and other relatives.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Karma Treat Memorial Fund in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850.

Mike Monroe

Cove and formerly

of Summerville

1902-2001

Raymond Joseph Mike Monroe, 99, of Cove and formerly of Summerville died Dec. 25 at a care center in Cove. There will be no funeral, but a public graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Summerville Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Monroe was born March 3, 1902, to John Thomas and Lizzie Laubscher Monroe in Swink, Colo. He attended school in Summerville after moving to the area with his family at the age of 8.

He worked as a night watchman at the shipyards in Portland and at a shake mill in Aberdeen, Wash., before returning to Summerville. He moved to Cove Cottage in 2000.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoyed photography, especially black and white photos of family, watching baseball and football, gardening, backpacking in the Eagle Cap Wilderness and visiting with old friends.

He was widely known as Uncle Mike.

Mr. Monroe was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his niece and her husband, Rena and Fred Rose of Elgin; a great-niece and her husband, Debbie and John Loree of Cove; and other relatives.

His brothers, Charles, John, James, Richard and Orion, and his sisters, Mary McDonald, Amy Dickes and Fanny Monsey, all died earlier.

Contributions may be made to a memorial fund in his name in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Jack Taylor

Joseph and formerly

of Baker City

1919-2001

Loreing F. Jack Taylor, 82, of Joseph and formerly of Baker City died Dec. 24 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Jan. 3 at the Joseph American Legion Hall. A private burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Taylor was born Feb. 9, 1919, to Balen Alonzo and Dorey Higgins Taylor in Baker City. He served in the Army during World War II and married Gwendoline Doak on Oct. 3, 1994. He was a member of the American Legion at Joseph and a past commander at Baker City. He enjoyed playing the violin and was a member of the Blue Mountain Fiddlers.

Survivors include his wife of Joseph; his children, William Taylor of Salem, Russell Taylor and Melanie Taylor, both of Baker City, Joan Taylor of La Grande, Debra Taylor of Coquille and Valerie Taylor of Coos Bay; numerous grandchildren; a brother, Howard and a sister, Della Crelland, both of Baker City; four stepchildren, James Doak, Margret Vandomelin, Robert Doak and Stephen Doak; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Wallowa Memorial Hospital in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise 97828.

Raymond Paulson

Raymond Paulson, 71, of La Grande died Wednesday at a local care center.

Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Woody Kennedy

Woody Kennedy died Wednesday at his home in Elgin.

Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Juanita Kinne

Formerly of La Grande

1918-2001

Juanita L. Kinne, 83, of Bend and formerly of La Grande, died Dec. 26. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home in Bend.

Mrs. Kinne was born Feb. 11, 1918, to Jake and Blanche Johnston Tupper in Gaston. She graduated from Eugene High School in 1936 and ran the Brownie Beauty Shop there until 1969. In 1954 she married Allan P. Kinne. In 1969 the couple moved to La Grande, where they lived for 20 years before moving to Bend. She was an ordained deacon in the Presbyterian church and was a member of the Sweet Adelines, the hospital auxiliary and the Beta Sigma Phi Laureate Alpha Xi Chapter of Bend.

Survivors include a son, Peter Tomseth of Redmond, two grandchildren and a special niece, Gay West of Bend, and other relatives. Her husband, four brothers and a sister all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Ray Watts

Formerly of La Grande

1911-2001

Ray T. Watts, 90 of Centralia, Wash., and formerly of La Grande died Dec. 25 at a care center. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Payette, Idaho. Brown Mortuary of Chehalis, Wash., was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Watts was born Aug. 9, 1911, to Walter and Frankie Dressler Watts in Payette. He married Leona Cohick there on June 17, 1939 and served in the Navy during World War II. He continued to serve for 14 years in the Army National Guard and worked as a salesman and driver for Meechan Distribution Co. and Farmers Co-op Creamery.

In 1994 the couple moved to

La Grande, where they attended the First Christian Church. He helped with the Boy Scouts and was a member of the VFW, the Odd Fellows and the American Legion.

He helped in the organization of the Payette Historical Society and was its president. He was also active in the Payette senior citizens group.

Survivors include his children, Jim and Colleen Watts of Burns, Doug and Doneta Watts of La Grande, Jan Bitney of Gresham and Deanna and John Long of Chehalis; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lewis Watts of Everett, Wash. His wife, a granddaughter, Amy Heitz, three brothers and three sisters, all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to any charity.

Evelyn Smith

Evelyn Smith of La Grande died Sunday at a local care home.

Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
