OBITUARIES FOR DECEMBER 29, 2003 - JANUARY 3, 2004

Anne Anderson

Formerly of La Grande

1918-2003

Anne E. Wheeler Anderson, 85, of Burns and formerly of La Grande, died at Harney District Hospital on Dec. 24. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Wednes-day at Zion Lutheran Church, 902 Fourth St.

Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Mrs. Anderson was born March 18, 1918, to Martin and Anna Pfeifer Neuman in Vaughn, Mont. She graduated from what is now known as Cleveland High School in Portland, and in March 1938, she married C.M. "Bud" Wheeler. He died in 1967. In September 1975, she married George Anderson; he died in 2000. She was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church and attended Peace Lutheran Church in Burns. She worked for the J.C. Penney Co. for 29 years, and enjoyed camping with her sisters, attending mother-daughters teas and her daughter's piano recitals, preparing holiday meals, traveling and appreciating God's creations.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Barbara and Duane West of Alicel, Susan and John Middleton of Salem, Janet Wheeler and Jim Lutz of Burns; two brothers and a sister, Fred Neuman, Henry Neuman and Helen Wegener, all of Portland; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and other relatives. Three brothers, Ronald, Rudolph and William Neuman, and three sisters, Ida Sprague, Hazel Cloos and Marie Neuman, all died earlier.

Bernice Voelz

La Grande

1916-2003

D. Bernice Voelz, 87, of La Grande died Dec. 27, at her home. The funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church, 901 Penn Ave.

Mrs. Voelz was born D. Bernice Barnett on Aug. 27, 1916, in Salt Lake City. She graduated from high school in Las Vegas, and on June 15, 1944, she married James Voelz in La Grande, where the couple ran Voelz Oil Company for 39 years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and taught Sunday school there for 30 years.

She was a member and past president of the Sorop-timists, and a member of the Knife and Fork Club where she served as secretary-treasurer for more than 20 years.

She was also a member of a bridge club, the Order of Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi, PEO, and the Grande Ronde Wheelers Good Sam Club.

For 14 years she served as hostess for the Shriners Children's Hospital when it held clinics in La Grande. With her husband she traveled worldwide through the Air Force military space available program. After retiring she helped at the family's miniature golf course. She enjoyed gardening and yard work.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Connie Voelz; and one grandson, all of La Grande; and other relatives.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Shriners Children's Hospital in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Dorothea Lee

Dorothea Lee, 87, of Union died this morning at a La Grande care center. Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Clyde L. Ott

Summerville-La Grande

1915-2003

A lifelong resident of the Summerville and La Grande area, Clyde L. Ott died Dec. 28 in a La Grande care center. He was 88.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Summerville Cemetery.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ott was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Summerville, the son of Frank and Grace Lathrop Ott. He was raised and educated in Summerville and Imbler, and graduated from Imbler High School.

He attended Eastern Oregon College for a time and later served as a sergeant in the Army during World War II.

He married Dorothy Nelson, two children were born of that marriage, and the marriage later ended. He worked as a mechanic for the Goss Motor Co. and also the Oregon Tractor Co. before he began working for

the Oregon Highway Dept. in La Grande, where he worked until his retirement in the late 1970s.

He married Elma Tuck, and she preceded him in death.

He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors including hunting

and working his land near La Grande. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and was active in the Union County Senior Center.

Survivors include his companion, Lola Scott of La Grande; two children and their spouses, Dennis and Judy Ott of Medford and Kathryn and Paul Thoren of Suisun City, Calif.; three step-children and spouses, Rosalee and Mike DeMonia of Richland, Wash., Chuck and Lavonne Berry of Walla Walla and David and Pattie Tuck of Kennewick, Wash.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and many stepgrandchildren and nieces and nephews.

His parents, six brothers and four sisters died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Union County Senior Center, in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande 97850.

Claude N. Braden

Claude N. "Dutch" Braden, 89, of Boise and formerly of La Grande, died Dec. 29 in Salem.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. A complete obituary will be published later.

Jacquelyn D. Smith

Jacquelyn D. Smith, 66, of Enterprise died at her home Jan. 1. Her funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bollman Funeral Home.
