Iona Matz La Grande Iona Matz, 85, of La Grande, died Sunday at a local care facility. Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Bruce Barts Bruce Barts, 90, of Springfield and formerly of La Grande died May 25. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will be published later. Mark L. Eckstein Mark Leland Eckstein, 42, of Elgin, died May 21 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. A celebration of life service will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at Elgin Stampede Hall, with the Rev. Susan Verner Smith-Allen of St. John's Evangelist Episcopal Church in Hermiston officiating. Frank M. Goshorn Frank McClure Goshorn, 82, of La Grande died Tuesday at his home. A full obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements. Charles Aster Union 1944-2002 Charles Milford "Chuck" Aster, 57, of Union died May 26 at his home. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. Burial will be at the Union Cemetery. A dinner for family and friends will follow at the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show building in Union. Fraternal services will be under the auspices of the Grande Ronde Valley Lodge 56 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Mr. Aster was born July 18, 1944, to Charles M. and Nora Mae O'Neal Aster in Spokane. On July 29, 1963, he married Dyann Jacot in Spokane. He served in the Navy for four years and the couple lived in Portland and Spokane before moving to Union. He retired from IBM as a technician. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masons, the Royal Order of Scotland, the Grande Ronde Valley Masonic Lodge, where he served as master two terms, the Royal Arch, the York Rite, the Al Kader Shrine Temple and the Cove Sportsmen's Club. He was the insurance chairman and West team manager for many years for the East-West Shrine football game. He volunteered to cook breakfast and judge horseraces for EOLS. He served on budget committees for both the school and the cemetery. He was a member of the Buffalo Peak Golf Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and building things. Survivors include his wife of Union, children and their spouses, Jeffrey Aster of La Grande and Charles and Debra Aster of Pilot Rock, his mother and sister, Beverly Pelley, both of Spokane, one grandchild, and other relatives. His father died earlier. Memorials may be made to the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorder fund or the Shriners' Children's Hospital in care of Daniels Chapel. Larry Maloney La Grande 1933-2002 Larry Joseph Maloney, 68, of La Grande died May 24 at a local care center. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church with Father Hank Albrecht officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Maloney was born Oct. 6, 1933, to Robert and Esther Schultz Maloney in Topeka, Kan. He served in the Navy from 1950 to 1952. He farmed in Kansas, married, and had three stepchildren. When the farm and marriage failed, he became a hobo, according to a story in The Observer of Sept. 16, 1994. He slept wherever he could find shelter, unrolling his sleeping bag under a bridge when it rained and under the stars when it was clear. Known as a walking encyclopedia, he was an avid reader and a fixture at the library at Eastern Oregon University. There are no survivors but many friends. Contributions may be made to help defray burial expenses in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. Include Maloney's name on any checks. Iola Botz-Gibson Iola Michand Botz-Gibson, 89, died at her home in Elgin this morning. Arrangements will be announced later by Loveland Funeral Chapel. Ulysses Fairchild Ulysses Verine Fairchild, 88, of Joseph died Wednesday. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Enterprise Cemetery. Memorials may be made to any charity in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St. Floyd Hagey Floyd Hagey, 91, of La Grande died Wednesday at Grande Ronde Hospital. A full obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Becky Sue Parsons A memorial service for Becky Sue Parsons, 49, of Elgin who died Dec. 10, 2001, will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Elgin Christian Church. Burial was at the Elgin Cemetery. A full obituary was published in December. Flora Portillo La Grande 1928-2002 Flora R. Portillo, 74, of La Grande died May 26 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church with Father Hank Albrecht officiating. Burial will be private. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Portillo was born April 13, 1928, to Theodore and Anita Becker Rodriguez in Billings, Mont. She married Raymond Portillo on May 1, 1945. The couple lived in Sacramento, Calif., before moving to La Grande two years ago to be near family. She was a member of the Catholic church and enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, crocheting and music. Survivors include her children, Virginia Portillo of La Grande and Raymond Portillo, 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a sister, Sydia Ortiz of Billings, a brother, Chavelo Rodriguez, and other relatives. Her husband, three brothers, Andy, Mike and Nick Rodriguez and a sister, Caroline Medina, died earlier. He attended elementary and high school in Elgin and enlisted in the Navy after graduation. He was honorably discharged and returned to Elgin. He worked as a logger for Richard Clark for the past 20 years. He married Hope Toy in 1989 in Las Vegas, and they had one daughter. They later divorced and he married Colleen Robinson. They were also divorced. Mr. Eckstein enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and mushrooming. He was mushrooming near Sloan Point in Wallowa County when he died. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Rosetta Eckstein of Elgin; his mother of Pendleton; his daughter, Meggan Lynn of Elgin; stepson, Ryan Porter of Athena; sisters, Shannon Toy of Elgin, Shirley Hensley of La Grande; brothers, Richard Eckstein of Billings, Mont., and Brad Eckstein of San Diego. Memorial contributions to assist with funeral expenses may be made to Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande. Ella Feik La Grande 1911-2002 Ella Elizabeth Feik, 91, of La Grande died May 25 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Feik was born May 7, 1911 to Ferdinand and Maria Reede Mettler in Beulah, N.D. She married Luther Feik on July 18, 1944. She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. Survivors include a stepson, Derald Feik of Portland, five grandchildren, a sister, Elsa Stimson of Grand Rapids, Mich., a brother, Helmut Mettler of Dickinson, N.D., a brother-in-law, Joe Feik and a nephew, Warren Perrine, both of La Grande, and other relatives. Her husband died earlier. Memorials may be made to any charity in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. Frank Goshorn La Grande 1919-2002 Frank McClure Goshorn, 82, of La Grande died May 27 at his home. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. Mr. Goshorn was born Aug. 4, 1919, to George S. and Helen Elizabeth McClure Goshorn in Grand Island, Neb. He moved to La Grande in 1950 from Hayward, Calif. He was a captain in the Army Air Corps, 355th Fighter Squadron, and was a member of the American Legion, the National Rifle Association and the Self Realization Fellowship. He was a farmer, was proud of being self-sufficient and raised cows, chickens, pigs, hay and fruit. He enjoyed reading and watching the birds and squirrels. Survivors include his wife, Annamarie of La Grande; children, Patricia Stineff of Independence, Pamela Kidd of Boggy Creek, Manitoba, Canada, and Pauline Chartier of Summerville; a sister, Mary Parker of Modesto, Calif.; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and other relatives. A brother, George Goshorn, died earlier. Nancy Hamilton-Junion Formerly of Cove 1961-2002 Nancy Hamilton-Junion, 41, of Pine, Ariz., and formerly of Cove died May 23 at her home after a long illness. A private family service was held at the home of her mother. Ms. Hamilton-Junion was born in Pueblo, Colo., Feb. 3, 1961. She attended Cove High School and graduated in Mesa, Ariz. She worked in the Phoenix Valley as a trainer for property managers. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Survivors include her companion, Tim Stucke of Pine; her mother, Jillian Buffum of Central Point; a brother, Willy Hamilton of Rawlins, Wyo.; sisters, Mikki End of La Grande and Carla Gonzales of Chandler, Ariz. Floyd Hagey La Grande 1911-2002 Floyd Douglas Hagey, 91, of La Grande died May 29 at Grande Ronde Hospital. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. Burial will follow at Island City Cemetery. Mr. Hagey was born May 21, 1911, to Henry E. and Maggie Clapp Hagey in Hilgard. On March 27, 1942, he married Evelyn Jones Howard in Weiser, Idaho. He worked most of his life for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a lifetime member of the La Grande Elks Lodge and the Baker Valley Scottish Rite Masons, and a member of the La Grande Masonic Lodge, the Al Kadar Shrine and the York Rite Masons. He served as a Rainbow Dad for the La Grande Rainbow Assembly and participated in the Shriners' food caravan for many years. He was the insurance liaison for the East-West All Star Shrine Football Game for several years. Survivors include his wife of La Grande, a son, Larry Howard of Portland, a daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Gary Webster of La Grande, a sister, Beulah Taal of La Grande, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and other relatives. Three brothers — Clifford, Ralph and Darl Hagey — all died earlier. Memorials may be made to the Shriners' Children's Hospital in care of Loveland Chapel. |
