‘Lucky' Blickenstaff



Ellen Eloda "Lucky" Blickenstaff, 83, of Union died Nov. 13 at her home. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Blickenstaff was born Oct. 27, 1919, to Ernest A. and Zilpha Benham Krewson in Sitkum. She lived in the Brewster Valley, where she learned her love of fishing, and graduated from high school in Myrtle Point. She married Lester Blickenstaff on Feb. 13, 1938, in Vancouver, Wash. The couple lived in many places while Mr. Blickenstaff was a civil engineer for the Oregon Highway Department. They retired in Bandon where they started the Western Heritage Antique and Book Store. She enjoyed beachcombing. She moved to the Grande Ronde Valley in 1991 to be near family.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Jerry and Birgit Blickenstaff of Corvallis, Allen Blickenstaff of Redmond, Wash., Eva and Jack Smith of Imbler, 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two sisters, Donna Barrows of Junction City and Velma Carl of Spokane.

Her husband, a son, Lynn Blickenstaff, and two brothers, Glade Krewson and Forrest Krewson, all died earlier.

Nancy Sue Smith

Formerly of La Grande


Nancy Sue Smith, 46, of Pendleton and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 13 at her home. A celebration of life will take place Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 1221 S.E. Court Place, in Pendleton. Bishop Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 7, 1955, to James Alden and Laurie Ann Helms Breshears in La Grande. She attended Pendleton High School and married Leonard Smith in March 1972.

The couple divorced in 1984. She loved animals and her children.

Survivors include her children, Brandy and Michael Smith, her mother and stepfather, Laurie and Richard Lyda of Pendleton, a sister, Patsy Sabin, a brother, Roy Breshears, all of Pendleton, a second brother, David Lyda of Milton-Freewater, and other relatives. Her father and a brother, Richard James Breshears, died earlier.

Albert Van Order


Albert Kenneth Van Order, 97, of Union died Friday at a La Grande care center. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published later.

Christopher Guenther

Formerly of La Grande


Christopher Ray "Chris" Guenther, 20, of Hermiston and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 13 at his home. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hermiston Cemetery. Burns Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Guenther was born Oct. 20, 1982, to Marvin and Linda Engelson Guenther in La Grande. He attended schools in Umatilla and Irrigon and worked at the Grocery Outlet, the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Hermiston and the Fleetwood Trailer Factory in Pendleton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents of Umatilla, his fiancee, Arissa Dyer and a son, Ryland Ray Guenther, both of Hermiston, his grandparents, Marshall and Joan Guenther of Umatilla and Roger Engelson of La Grande, and other relatives. One grandmother, Dixie Engelson, died earlier.

Clarence ‘Soapy' Magill



Clarence "Soapy" Magill, 77, formerly of Elgin, died Nov. 15 in Estacada. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Zion Cemetery in Estacada. Estacada Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Magill was born March 5, 1925, in Hendrickson, Mo. The family moved to Tule Lake, Calif., and to Estacada in 1947. He married Imogene Surface in 1945. He logged and owned logging trucks in Estacada until 1967, when he moved his logging operation to Elgin. He returned to Estacada recently to be with his family.

He was known for his vivid stories about his experiences growing up in the Ozarks and his logging stories, family members said.

Survivors include his wife of Estacada, children, Eugene Magill and Dianna Gobler, both of Estacada, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his sisters, Katherine Sparks of Hillard, Mo., and Clarabelle Magill of St. Clare, Mo.
