Rena Freels



A service was held this morning at the Hurricane Creek Grange for Rena M. Freels of rural Enterprise, who died Nov. 15 at the age of 78.

A private burial followed at Alder Slope Cemetery.

Mrs. Freels was very active in the Hurricane Creek Grange and won many national Grange honors. She was in Rebekah Lodge 119, the Lioness and the Cow Belles and was a top organizer of the local multiple sclerosis society. A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and working in her flower beds.

She was born Nov. 29, 1923, on Alder Slope to Frances Elizabeth Rhoads Terry and Basil Clifton Terry.

She married John Freels on Feb. 12, 1945, in Pendleton. He survives her, as do three sons, Marshall of Olympia, Wash., Harold of Cove and Ted of Enterprise; two brothers, Lawrence Terry of Lostine and Wallace Terry of Elgin; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Clifford Terry,died earlier.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise 97828.

Joseph Feik

La Grande


Joseph W. Feik, 85, of La Grande died Nov. 17 at his home. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1802 Gekeler Lane. Viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Primary Room at the Stake Center before the service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mr. Feik was born Feb. 12, 1917, to Noah M. and Myrtie Stroud Feik in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School and attended Eastern Oregon Normal School. He married Marie Nedelcoff on June 18, 1963, in the LDS Temple at Salt Lake City.

He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor and retired after 40 years. He built his own home and earned a private pilot's license in 1954. He enjoyed flying, cutting firewood, working with his hands, spending time in the woods and spending time with his children.

Survivors include his wife of

La Grande; children and their spouses, Aaron and Sue Feik of Bothell, Wash., Dale and Linda Feik of Forest Grove, Joseph and Pat Feik of La Grande, and Melissa and Paul Keefer of Boardman; a stepson and his wife, David and Terry Reynard of Nevada; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eva Evans of California and Leola Blake of Utah.

A stepdaughter, Barbara Breedlove, three brothers, Thurman, Luther and Howard Feik, and a sister, Dora Morton, all died earlier.

Roger Turner

Baker City


G. Roger Turner, 68, of Baker City and formerly of Medical Springs, died Nov. 19 at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m Friday at Gray's West and Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. in Baker City, with Pastor Lura Kidner-Miesen of the United Methodist Church and Father Rob Irwin of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral officiating. Private cremation interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Turner was born Oct. 14, 1934, to George and Pearl Emery Turner in Wingville. He graduated from Baker High School in 1952 and on June 13, 1953, he married Arleta Wirth. The couple raised Hereford cattle on their ranch in Medical Springs and on deeded acres on Forest Service and BLM lands in Baker, Union and Wallowa counties.

He retired from ranching in 1972 and moved to Baker, where he worked at the Baker Livestock Auction and at Ford's Welding. In 1976 he moved to Nyssa, where he was a state brand inspector. He moved to the care center in 1986 after he developed MS.

He was a member of the Baker County and Oregon Cattlemen's associations, the Baker Elks Lodge and the Sumpter Valley Railroad, and served as director of the Keating Water and Soil Conservation District and the State Forestry Board as a charter member. He was nominated by the chamber of commerce as Farmer of the Year, and was a long-time 4-H club leader and a volunteer at the Junior Livestock Show and the Kiwanis auction.

He loved to vacation with family and friends in the Minam area.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Lanna Jo and Gary Dawson of Elgin, Kellie and Rock Harrold of Albany, and Bret and Shelia Turner of Ontario, seven grandchildren, his father and stepmother, George and Effie Turner, and an uncle, George McLeish, all of Baker City.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Baker Senior Center or Doernbecher Children's Hospital in care of Gray's West and Co., 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City 97814.

Geraldine Dailey

Geraldine Dailey, 89, formerly of Perry, died Sunday at a care center in Walla Walla.

Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Rita Blanton

Rita Blanton, 70, of Union died Friday at a local care center.

Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

‘Jeff' Rushton

Jeffrey "Jeff" L. Rushton, 21, of Grass Valley and a student at Eastern Oregon University, died Thursday in La Grande. Services are pending and under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel. A full obituary will be published later.

Verne Russell



Verne H. Russell, 82, of Joseph died Nov. 20 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. The Holy Rosary will be said beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St. in Enterprise. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Katherine's Catholic Church, also in Enterprise. Burial will follow at the Prairie Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Russell was born Jan. 8, 1920, to Lee and Theresa Russell in Joseph. He attended school there and the University of Idaho, and married Mary Daisley on Aug. 12, 1941. The couple moved to Seattle, where he worked for Boeing as an engineer. In 1944, during World War II, he was drafted into the Army and served until 1946.

The family returned to Joseph, where he worked for Wallowa County for 45 years as roadmaster, surveyor and director of public works. He served on the Joseph School Board, as president of the Joseph Chamber of Commerce and as mayor. In 1991 he was grand marshal of Chief Joseph Days.

Survivors include his wife, a son and his wife, Jim and Theresa, a daughter and her husband, Judy and Bill Ross, all of Joseph, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister, Edna Roundy of Joseph, a brother, Dan and his wife Agnes Russell of Bellevue, Wash., and other relatives. A brother, George Russell, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to Wallowa Memorial Hospital or the Multiple Sclerosis Society in care of Bollman Funeral Home.
