OBITUARIES FOR OCTOBER 13 - 18, 2003

Lula Harlow

La Grande

1908-2003

Lula Estelle Harlow, 94, of La Grande died Oct. 9 at a local care center. Viewing will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Cemetery with Pastor Gary Hood officiating.

Mrs. Harlow was born Oct. 22, 1908, to Lewis and Lucille Strange Ansell in Boise. She attended schools in Idaho and on July 3, 1929, married Price Harlow in La Grande. She worked as a clerk for various retail stores and lived in Seattle before returning to La Grande in 1980. She was a member of the Cherry Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Cove. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and working outdoors with her garden and flowers.

Survivors include children, Barbara Elam of La Grande and Dale Price of Hawaii; one grandson; a sister, Gerry Metcalf; a brother, Richard Ansell of La Grande and other relatives and friends. Her husband, two sisters, Phyllis Cochran and Harriet Nygord, and a brother, Phillip Ansell, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Pioneer Park Church in care of Daniels Chapel.

Doris Grant

La Grande

1923-2003

Doris Jean McLain Grant, 79, of La Grande, died Oct. 11, after a short illness. At her request there will be no public service.

Doris was born in La Grande on Oct. 16, 1923, to A.H. McLain and Amy Hulse McLain. She graduated from La Grande High School and attended the University of Oregon. She later married Kenneth K. Grant, who died Dec. 26, 1994.

La Grande residents will remember that Doris and Kenneth Grant managed the

La Grande theaters for many years. They also owned and operated their own photography studio and developing service. She was an avid reader.

Doris is survived by her sisters and brother, Joyce McLain Bak of Yakima, Wash., Laura McLain Hayse of Baker City, David McLain of La Grande; and many nieces and nephews. Her compassionate and caring spirit will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Blue Mountain Humane Society in care of Daniels Chapel of

the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850.

Lorraine Sasser

Wallowa

1931-2003

Lorraine Sasser, 72, of Wallowa died Oct. 8 at her home after a long illness.

A funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Enterprise. Burial will follow at Bramlet Cemetery in Wallowa.

Mrs. Sasser was born April 8, 1931, to Levi and Helen Johnson in Wallowa. She was raised in Elgin and Wallowa, and on May 22, 1949, married Zelmer Sasser. In spite of her illness she remained active in her church, with Al-Anon, serving at the food bank and participating in the lives of her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of Wallowa; children and their spouses, Mike Sasser

and Marty Sasser, both of

La Grande, Myrna and Ray Neil of Pendleton and Marilyn and Jim Berry of John Day; and seven grandchildren. A brother, Steve Johnson, and a sister, Dollie Jewell, both died earlier.

Memorials may be made to Hospice, the American Cancer Society or any charity in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.

Christa Riggle

La Grande

1968-2003

Christa "Chris" Riggle, 35, of La Grande died Oct. 12 at her home. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 901 Penn Ave. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements

Ms. Riggle was born Oct. 10, 1968, to Fred G. and Judy B. Peterson Riggle in Hampton, Va. She attended Greenwood Elementary School and

La Grande Middle School, and graduated as an honor student from

La Grande High School in 1986. She worked for a time as a night auditor and shift manager for the Pony Soldier Motel and then at Taco Time restaurant, where she worked her way up to manager. She continued there until she became disabled, and could no longer work. She enjoyed reading the Bible, working crafts with beads and candles and being with her dog, Maddy. She was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples Of Christ, where she worked with the children's programs.

Survivors include her father and his wife, Fred and Debby Riggle; her mother; a sister and brother-in-law, Angela and Larry Neill; and other relatives, all of La Grande Her grandparents died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Blue Mountain Humane Association in care of the Loveland Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Ruth Kessler

Enterprise

1911-2003

Ruth Genevieve "Gigi" Kessler, 92, of Enterprise died Oct. 9 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lostine Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Mrs. Kessler was born Aug. 20, 1911, to William and Sue Holland in El Paso, Texas. She graduated from high school in Coronado, Calif., and attended San Diego State College. In 1935 she married Horton C. Kessler in Norfolk, Va. The couple lived in many places while her husband was in the Navy. He retired in 1958 and died in 1979. In 1993 she moved to Wallowa County to be near family. After living on Alder Slope for a short time, she moved to Enterprise where she was a member of the Christian Church.

She was a member of the Kappa Theta sorority, that later became Gamma Phi Beta, and also joined the Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crafts of all kinds. She marketed craft items and patented several ideas: a newspaper bundler called the forest saver; an hors d'oeuvres served, the party caddy; and the blanket anchor. She enjoyed traveling and visited East Africa, Alaska, South America, Austria, the Far East, Australia, New Zealand and Polynesia.

Once she took a "discovery flight to nowhere" on the Concorde, during which the plane passed through the sound barrier.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Bill and Lyn Kessler of Enterprise and Diane and Bob Cowden of Joseph; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the building fund of the Lostine Presbyterian Church in care of Bollman's Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise

Steven Garner

Formerly of Union

1960-2003

Steven James Garner, 43, of Sweet Home and formerly of Union, died Sept. 29 in Junction City of natural causes while driving. Burial was at the Alford Cemetery near Harrisburg. The family held a memorial service Oct. 4 at which over 100 balloons were released in his memory.

Mr. Garner was born May 12, 1960, to James and Joyce Garner in Moses Lake, Wash. He was raised in Eugene and on June 28, 1991, married Tamara McLean. The couple lived in Union from 1999 until recently. He worked for North Powder Lumber and for the Stateline project building bases for wind turbines. He was a loving father, husband, friend and son.

Survivors include his wife and children, Cody, Michaela and Megan, all of Sweet Home; his mother of Union; two sisters, Susan Williamson and Karen Anderson, both of Eugene, and other relatives. His father died earlier.

Velma Speckhart

Formerly of La Grande

1917-2003

Velma Margaret Speckhart, 85, of Tigard and formerly of La Grande, died Oct.13 at a care center. At her request there will be no public service. Burial will be at Bluff Hall Cemetery in Adams County, Ill.

Mrs. Speckhart was born Dec. 26, 1917, to John J. and Nellie Ruby Speckhart in Bluff Hall, Illinois. She graduated from high school in Quincy, Ill., and later from Western Illinois University with a degree in education. She taught school for 11 years, and on Feb. 2, 1952, she married Herbert Speckhart Jr. The couple made their home in La Grande. He died in 1974. She recently moved to Tigard.

She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in

La Grande, the Blue Mountain Gem Club, the Two Rock Extension Unit and the American Association of University Women.

Survivors include her step-grandchildren, Mary Koza and Joanne Lowry-Parsons, both of La Grande; six step-great-grandchildren; six step-great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Speckhart and J. Russel Speckhart, both of Quincy; and other relatives. A stepdaughter, Helen Jean Speckhart, died

earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Eastern Oregon University Foundation or to any charity in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.
