Repplinger, Beedle, Titus, McDaniel

Vernon Ray Repplinger

Enterprise

Dorothy Beedle

La Grande

1928-2013

Dorothy Valerie LaBerge Beedle, 84, of La Grande and Desert Hot Springs, Calif., died March 10 at her daughter’s home in Portland. Per her request there will be no service.

Dorothy was born June 30, 1928, to Conrad and Marie Stella (Porter) LaBerge in Cleveland, Ohio. When she was 10 years old, the family moved to Los Angeles, Calif. Dorothy spent her youth chasing after her older brothers and dreaming about a career as a registered nurse.

Following graduation from Hamilton High School in 1946, she enrolled at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan Nursing School in Los Angeles. A true nurse, Dorothy was a selfless and compassionate person.

After graduating from nursing school, Dorothy met her future husband, Dick Beedle, in 1950. They were married Feb. 24, 1951, in Los Angeles and then moved to Mill Valley, Calif., where they had three children, Rick, Joyce and Marilyn. Motherhood was a role Dorothy cherished, and she took a break from nursing to raise her children. No matter what any member of her family was striving to achieve, Dorothy was the loudest cheerleader, strongest advocate and fiercest defender.

In 1975 Dick and Dorothy moved to La Grande, where she became the first charge nurse in the newly opened Intensive Care Unit at Grande Ronde Hospital. Dorothy also worked for several local doctors and was the first administrator for the home health department.

Dorothy rarely encountered a puzzle she couldn’t solve and delighted in learning new things. A kid at heart, she was always full of energy and loved to tell tales of her mischievous behavior. Her ability to befriend anyone got her into curious situations that somehow always ended well. She constantly surprised her family with her playful antic, and her joyful perspective on life was contagious.

Upon retirement in 1988, Dick and Dorothy covered thousands of miles in their motor home. During this time they discovered Caliente Springs in Desert Hot Springs, Calif., where they settled during the winter months. An avid gardener, Dorothy started the “Dig in the Dirt Gang” with her dear friend Ruthie, and recruited volunteers to help her beautify the park by planting hundreds of flowers each year. Each of her children inherited her love of gardening, and her sense of adventure.

She was preceded in death by her father, Conrad LaBerge; mother and stepfather, Marie and Dr. Fred H. Nelson; brother, Les LaBerge; and six uncles and two aunts.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Dick Beedle; brother, John LaBerge of southern California; children and their spouses, Rick Beedle and Stephanie of La Grande, Joyce Beedle and Wes of Portland and Marilyn Knight and David of La Grande; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and dozens of nieces and nephews.
