Sullivan, Looslie, Kohler,

Travis ‘Dale’ Sullivan

Formerly of La Grande

A funeral mass will be held for Travis “Dale” Sullivan, formerly of La Grande, at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Apostles Church in Meridian, Idaho. A reception will follow at the church.

Remembrances may be left at www.AccentFuneral.com. Committal services with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.

 Daniel Sherman Looslie

Daniel Sherman Looslie, 86, of Elgin, died Aug. 11 at his residence. At his request there will be no public services. Interment will be at Elgin Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Known as Dan, he was born Jan. 19, 1927, in Medical Springs,, one of 10 children of George Andrew and Alice Letty (Miller) Looslie. He grew up in Medical Springs and attended school in Powder Valley. He moved to North Powder where he met Phyllis Lucille Taylor. They were married Aug. 15, 1947. Dan and Phyllis later moved to La Grande where Dan worked in the meat processing industry. Eventually the family moved to Elgin where Dan owned L. & W. Meats.

Dan was an avid fisherman and hunter. In his younger days he made many fishing trips with his sons and friends. He also loved to work in the outdoors, especially cutting wood. He also enjoyed working in his woodworking shop, building furniture for his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, Nov. 20, 2012; parents; and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his sons, Mike Looslie and his wife, Kathy, of Elgin and Danny Looslie of Lexington; sister, Georgie Wright of La Pine; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Charmaine Kohler

Charmaine Kohler, 70, died Aug.11 in McMinnville. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Aug. 24, at the McMinnville Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Public viewing will be held before the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the church. An additional graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 31 at the Union Cemetery.

Charmaine was born May 20, 1933, in Medical Springs, the fourth of seven children of Urdel Wandel and Mildred Wanker Lay. She grew up in Eastern Oregon on a ranch in Baker County and was prone to climb trees looking for birds’ nests and running barefoot through the fields. She married her high school sweetheart, Larry R. Kohler, Dec. 30, 1952, in the LDS Temple in Idaho Falls, Idaho. After Larry became a pharmacist, they settled in McMinnville.

In addition to community involvement, the Kohlers were very active in church service, particularly working with the youth. Many people not of blood relation call her “Mom” or “Grandma.”

Charmaine loved her historic house, decorating it and having it be a place to gather. She cared more about the ‘“home” than the “house.” When speaking of Charmaine people are prone to say, “She was a lady.”

Charmaine died after living many years with Alzheimer’s disease. Despite the toll it took, she never lost her sweet disposition and grace.

Survivors include her children, Larry Ronald Kohler, Gregory Dean Kohler, Julie Charmaine Westbroek and David John Kohler, and 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the General Missionary Fund, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, c/o Macy and Son Funeral Directors. To leave online condolences, please visit www.macyandson.com.
