Helen Irene Graves

Island City

1921-2013

Helen Irene Graves, 92, of Island City, died at her residence on Aug. 26,. There will be no public services. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen was born July 31, 1921, in Griggsville, Ill., to Frederick John and Ina Tabor (Morton) Griffeth. She lived in Island City, Mount Vernon, Paulina and Prineville, where she graduated from Crook County High School.

Helen married John Anderson Graves in Reno, Nev., on Dec. 4, 1939.

Helen lived life fully engaged in raising her family. She ran the family business side by side with her husband.

She was an avid outdoorswoman — she hunted, fished and gathered each season to provide wonderful food for her family and friends. She always had fresh meat, game, fish, huckleberries, produce and mushrooms. She cooked and canned, making the most out of every harvested morsel. She was frugal and resourceful.

Helen was creative as a homemaker. She sewed and knitted and because of her outstanding skills, was a fine dresser with an amazing sense of style. Her family benefitted from her skills and hard work as a mother and a provider.

She brought her quick thinking, sharp wit and loving generosity to all who knew her. She brought her caretakers into her life as employees and embraced them as her family.

Helen is survived by her husband, John Anderson Graves of Island City; her daughter, Sherry Nash and her spouse, Ron, of Island City; five grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Dean Graves.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of choice.
