Carol June Noble

Formerly of Cove

1945-2012

Carol June Noble, formerly of Cove, died in Beaverton Dec. 5. A service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Daniels Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center in La Grande with interment to follow in Cove.

Carol June was born in Wheaton, Mo., June 29, 1945, to Harold and Loretta Craft Noble.

She was born with Down’s Syndrome, and her parents were advised to place her in a facility if they wanted more children. Luckily, they ignored that advice, and Carol June became “Sissy” to the five brothers and sisters who followed, and truly was the heart of their home.

Sissy lived a full and productive life, always busy, independent, with an impish sense of humor. She loved country music, babies, her birthday (which came several times a year) and Christmas. She was a joy to buy for, family members said, as she was pleased with anything — a box of crayons, spools of thread, color books or CDs.

She loved to talk, sing and have her picture taken. Sissy was active and healthy into her mid 60s, and was content in her last days. She will be forever missed by all who knew her, the family said.

Carol June leaves an aunt, Colleen Craig, of Cassville, Mo.; brothers Cecil (Lilas) of Rye Valley, Patrick (Darra) of Aloha; sisters Linda Dow (Mike) of Hawthorne, Nev., Frances Jacklin (Rich) of Beaverton, Karen Collins of La Grande, and many nephews and nieces.

Norma Thomas

Formerly of Medical Springs

1937-2012

Norma Thomas, 75, of Baker City, died Nov. 30 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gray’s West and Co. Pioneer Chapel.

Norma was born Sept. 29, 1937, in Hollister, Calif., to James
and Violet (Chadwell) Kaufman.

On May 17, 1953, she married Ronald Thomas. They homesteaded in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1959. In 1974 they purchased a ranch near Medical Springs, where they raised cattle and later sheep. Norma worked for 38 years as a rancher in Medical Springs.

Norma was a founding member and affiliate of both the Pioneer Cemetery and the Medical Springs Rural Fire Department. Her hobbies included watercolor painting, ceramics and flower gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a great-granddaughter, Sierra.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Jim and Jodi Thomas of Baker City, Pam and Bruce Walker of Emmett, Idaho, and Linda and Michael Mann of Portland, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Medical Springs Rural Fire Department in care of Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City 97814.
