Formerly of Cove

Cheryl Louise Townsend, 50, of Kennewick, Wash., died Feb. 24. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mueller’s Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union, Kennewick.

Helen Rost

La Grande

1924-2013

Helen Martha Rost, 88, of La Grande, died Feb. 23 following complications of pneumonia and congestive heart failure.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at the Loveland Funeral Chapel in La Grande at 10 a.m. Friday. In the spring, her family will host a service at Forest Lawn Cemetery, in Bremerton, Wash., where her ashes will be interred next to her husband, Clinton Rost, who died earlier.

Helen was born on Aug. 25, 1924, to Lora and Jim Crowser, in Ash Creek, S.D. The oldest of eight children, she spent her early years in rural South Dakota where her parents and grandparents were ranchers; she later married there, and subsequently moved to Montana, Washington and Oregon.

She had six children: Maurice (Darlene) Welfl of La Grande; Marty Wren of Hansville, Wash.; Mark (Sandy) Welfl of Princeton, Texas; Paula Rebar of Washington, D.C.; Cheri McGary (George Davis) of Kingston, Wash.; and Gary (Barbara) Rost of Eugene, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen, the oldest of eight children, is survived by two sisters, Doris (Joe) Ingraham of Battle Ground, Wash., and Darylene Larson of Cheyenne, Wyo.

Helen will be remembered for her sweet and gentle nature, positive attitude and her amazing kindness and generosity. She could take an ordinary home and transform it into a comfortable haven for her family on a limited budget. Over the years, her home served as a mecca to extended family and friends; there was always room at her table, and she would cook and bake for six or a dozen, effortlessly and with grace. In addition, she was an impeccable upholsterer, seamstress and tailor who made many of her children’s clothes, as well as alter and create clothes for friends and customers.

After her kids grew up and she became an “empty nester,” Helen focused her abundant energy outside the home and ventured into business. A hard worker, she became a co-owner of a dog coat manufacturing company, based on Bainbridge Island, Wash., that designed and sold dog apparel in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Later, she and a business partner bought and ran a successful tropical fish store in Silverdale, Wash.

Helen loved music. She played the same violin (fiddle) that her father had originally played; in addition, she played piano, harmonica and mandolin. As a young girl, she entertained with her dad and other musicians, playing for dances throughout South Dakota. Once she settled in La Grande, she played fiddle with Dottie Brown’s musical group and participated in the Old Time Fiddler’s Association

After she retired, she traveled to Germany, Austria, and Italy and throughout the U.S. She became somewhat of a “snowbird,” spending time in Arizona with family and friends. Eventually, she settled in La Grande to be near her eldest son, Maurice (“Mo”), with whom she shared a special bond.

Her parents, Lora and Jim; her sisters, Hazel and Donna; her brothers, Lester, Chester and Edward; and her husband, Clinton, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1650 NW Naito Parkway, Suite 190, Portland, OR 97209; by phone at 503-416- 0201; or online at www.alz.org/oregon/.

For those unable to attend services for Helen, her Celebration of Life will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.funeralrecording.com. To view the service, use the Memorial ID code 4082.

Online condolences to the family may be made at www.lovelandfuneralchapel.com.

Susan Elizabeth Meyers

La Grande

1950-2013

Susan Elizabeth Meyers, 62, died unexpectedly Feb. 23.

A simple memorial service will be held t. in La Grande. That’s at the corner of Sixth and O. Those attending are asked to use the back basement entrance.

Susan was born in Portland April 18, 1950, the daughter of Avril and Jane Meyers. She grew up in Beaverton and graduated from Portland State University and Oregon Health and Science University.

She was deeply loved by so many, family members said.

Those who knew her will remember a truly remarkable woman. She was a compassionate and talented physician, an avid horsewoman and a spectacular gardener who could spin dirt into golden blooms.

Most of all, she was a fierce and devoted mother. She is survived by her children, Kara Sitz-Narciso, Rebecca Watson and Scott Meyers, as well as her four grandchildren whom she adored.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
