Robert 'Tex' Miller

Enterprissse

 

Robert "Tex" Miller, 86, of Enterprise, died Dec. 20. A service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the VFW Hall in Enterprise. A full obituary appeared earlier. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

 


David W. Clemens

La Grande

 

A funeral service for David W. Clemens, who died Jan. 20, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Island City. A viewing for family and friends will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service. A full obituary will be available later.

David was 55 and lived in La Grande.

Beulah "Penny" Sasser, 72, of Enterprise, died Jan. 19. A service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home. A full obituary will be available later.

Jack K. Furgason

Formerly of La Grande

1922-2012

 

Jack Kenneth Furgason, 89, formerly of La Grande, died unexpectedly at his home on Jan. 13. The service was held Jan. 21 at Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, Folsom-Bishop. Condolences may be sent to www.pioneerchapel.com

Jack was born Nov. 11, 1922, in La Grande to Alexander and Kittie (Mulholland) Furgason. Jack attended elementary school in a one-room school house in Ladd Canyon. He later attended and graduated from La Grande High School in 1940.

Jack and his high school sweetheart, Lois Elaine Holman, married in 1942. They celebrated 69 years together. The couple moved to Seattle where Jack was employed at Boeing Aircraft. Later he was drafted into the military and proudly served with the Army Air Force in China and India (CBI) during World War II.

Jack’s career in the electrical industry began in Portland with Portland General Electric Company where he served an apprenticeship before becoming a journeyman lineman. He worked for seven years at Portland General then changed companies and began working at Pacific Power & Light also in Portland. He transferred to Walla Walla, Wash., in 1963, living there for six years before moving to Pendleton as a district foreman where he worked until retirement in 1983.

Jack was very involved in training new employees in the electrical trades through the apprentice programs. His years of work with the Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committees gained him recognition with the Oregon Department of Education. In 1990 he was awarded a certificate of appreciation and membership in Oregon’s Apprenticeship Hall of Fame for his exceptional effort and dedication in the training of apprentices.

Jack also spent considerable time and effort as a key member of the Pacific Power Joint Safety Committee. This group was responsible for publishing a safety manual that established safe working rules for outside electrical trades. Jack was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 64 years.

Jack was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and VFW Post 922. He was a past member of the Elks Lodge and Eagles Lodge; and he was Wagon Master for Campers Club; Webelos den leader; and Little League coach.

Jack said he was proud to be a fourth-generation Oregonian. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kittie and Alex; sister, Frances Shepherd; brothers, Lee and Dempsey Furgason; and nephew, John Shepherd.

Survivors include wife, Lois Furgason of Pendleton; daughter, Susan (Mike) Rippet of Bend; son, Dana Furgason of Rock Springs, Wyo.; daughter, Nancy (Wayne) Simpson of Pendleton; several grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross or to any charity.

 


Ethel C. Harvey

La Grande

1919-2012

 

Ethel Caroline Harvey, 92, of La Grande, died Jan. 19 at Wildflower Lodge. Graveside services will be held later.  Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of the arrangements.

Ethel was born Nov. 26, 1919, the daughter of Melvin and Elsie Martin in Creswell.  She graduated from school in Creswell and on Nov. 1, 1943, she married Mark Milo Harvey.  They lived in Oregon and in California for many years.  

She owned and operated a dog kennel while in California.  In 1972, they settled in Portland where she worked as chef at Lucky's Restaurant for many years and babysat for the Methodist Church. 

She was active with the senior center in Portland where she did ballroom dancing three times a week. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1971. In 1972, she moved to La Grande to be near family. She enjoyed flowers, yard work, dancing and cooking. She loved spending time with her family and loved dogs.

Survivors include her children, Marsha and Al Proctor of Oklahoma, Annette Roberts of Imbler, Rebecca Harvey of Richland, Wash., Eunice and Rich Voegele of Medford and Gary and Marie Harvey of Portland; 18 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Harvey; one grandson, Bill McIntosh; and three sisters and three brothers.
