John W. Dulin

Lostine

1915-2012

John W. Dulin, of Lostine, was born Aug. 3, 1915 in Springfield, Mo. to Christine May Youngblood and John Thomas Dulin. He died early in the morning of July 21, just 14 days shy of his 97th birthday.

Dulin was raised on the family farm in Springfield, Mo. where he gained his love for the outdoors and learned a strong work ethic. He was the youngest of four brothers and one sister. In his early twenties, he moved to California where he picked fruit during the depression and eventually went to work for Bethleham Steel in Vernon, Calif., where he worked for 40 years. He married his wife, Dorothy, on Nov. 16, 1941. They were married 66 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in France.

Dulin and his wife made their home in Whittier, Calif., where they built a home in an orange grove in 1950. As Dulin and his wife were considering where to retire, they traveled through the Lostine area. They spent the night at Pat’s Cabins up the Lostine River. Before they left, they had purchased property along the Lostine River in 1972. Soon after his retirement several years later, he started building a log garage and then a house. He read books on building log homes, and with this knowledge and his native intelligence, he built a large log garage and a three bedroom, two story log house where he lived until his death.

Dulin loved his family and made sure they had family vacations each year, whether camping at the beach or a road trip to see relatives. Dulin enjoyed fishing, hunting and hiking in the Wallowas. He could out hike his kids and grandkids. He ran in the 10K Lostine River Run when he was 70 years old. He was a kind and generous man who loved people and enjoyed helping his neighbors in any manner needed. He loved telling stories of his early years on the farm and his life during the depression.

Dulin is survived by his daughter Christina Dulin Geyer and her husband Chris of Lostine and his son John W. Dulin Jr. and his wife Linda of Whittier, Calif. John was blessed with 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

His family and friends will gather for a celebration of life on Monday, July 30 at 10 a.m. at the Lostine Cemetary. A buffett lunch will be served at the family home following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wallowa Valley Health Care.
