Ethel J. Tanzey, 84, of Enterprise died March 6. A service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Enterprise Christian Church in Enterprise. Memorials may be given to Senior Meals. A full obituary will be published later.
Elaine C. Cantrell
Elaine C. Cantrell, 93, of La Grande, died March 5 at a local care facility. A viewing will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande. A private burial will be at the
Elaine was born on Sept. 5, 1919, in Butte, Mont., to Gustave and Julienne (Mathieu) Tirre. Her parents were immigrants from Belgium and worked in mines in Butte. She grew up in mining towns of Kemmerer and Diamondville, Wyo., where her mother owned boarding houses for miners. She had a brother, William, and a sister, Victoria.
She married Howard Cantrell of Hilgard in 1942 and lived with his parents on their Five Points Creek Ranch while her husband fought in the South Pacific in World War II. She was reunited with her husband in 1945. She moved around California, Nevada, Oregon and finally Washington with Howard, who worked in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She had three children, Carolyn and Rosalie, both of whom preceded her in death, and son, Howard, who lives on the Five Points Creek Ranch.
She graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle and started teaching school in 1961. She moved back to La Grande with Howard in 1966 when he retired to the Five Points Creek Ranch. She taught fourth grade in La Grande until she retired in 1984 to care for her ill husband, who died in 1985. She moved to La Grande to a little house on Second Street, where she lived until 2010.
Survivors include her son, Howard; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Blue Mountain Humane Association in care of Daniels~Knopp.
Maydean Jane Haydock
Maydean Jane Haydock, 88, of La Grande, died March 3 at a local care facility. Graveside services will be at the Island City Cemetery at 2 p.m. today. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Maydean was born on Jan. 5, 1925, in Pendleton to Leroy and Doris (Mathis) Shawver. Maydean attended grade school and junior high school in Pendleton before her family moved to La Grande, where she graduated from La Grande High School. Maydean was married to Edward F. Potter and Arthur Haydock.
During her working years, Maydean was employed as a cook for the Grande Ronde Hospital. She was also a cook at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She worked as a maid at the Stardust Motel and the Sac Annex. She also sold Avon.
Maydean enjoyed collecting dolls, planting flowers, collecting poetry books and going to yard sales. She liked bowling and was a member of the Eagles Lodge.
Maydean is survived by her son, Gerald Potter of La Grande; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F. Potter; husband, Art Haydock; and two sons, Edward J. Potter and David Ray Potter.
