Lu attended school in Kansas and Nebraska, graduating in 1940 at the age of 15 from Humboldt High School. In Lu’s youth, she worked at the dime store where her mother baked. Lu excelled at tap dancing, entertaining during intermission at the local movie theater in her red and white sailor’s costume.

Lu married Carl William Stauffer, “Bill,” in 1942. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. During WWII, Lu puddled bombs at a bomb factory in Nebraska. Later, when they lived in the Seattle area, Lu rode the ferry to work at the telephone company. Lu and Bill lived in Kansas for about 10 years. Bill went to Kansas State University, and his agriculture teaching job lead them to Oregon in 1959, first to Sandy, The Dalles and then Central Point. Lu earned her CNA at Rogue Valley Community College and worked as a private nurse and at a rest care home until her retirement in 1994.

Lu loved her family and friends more than anything. She loved dancing, good food, movies and games. She earned a bowling trophy, used the computer and was an accomplished seamstress and crafter.

In Enterprise, Lu lived independently near her family for four years, until this March when she lived with her son and his wife.
