Eoff, Zollman

Robert ‘Keith’ Eoff

Formerly of Elgin

Graveside services for Robert “Keith” Eoff will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Highland Cemetery in Elgin.

Mervin Wayne Zollman

A celebration of life for Mervin Wayne Zollman will begin at 11 a.m. May 11 in the Enterprise VFW Hall with honors at the Enterprise cemetery. A lunch will follow.

Zollman, 90, died Dec. 18, 2012, in Enterprise with his companion, Shirley Doud, at his side.

Mervin was born Feb. 23, 1922, in Jericho Springs, Mo., to Robert and Agnes Zollman. At the age of 14, he moved to Wallowa County with his family and settled on Alder Slope.

Mervin graduated from Enterprise High School in 1940 and enlisted in the U.S. Army after America entered World War II. His unit was captured at the Battle of the Bulge, and Mervin spent several months in a German prisoner of war camp. After his liberation by the British in 1944, Mervin then served in California as a military policeman, where he spent time with his best friend, Mike Brennan.

Mervin came home to Wallowa County and in 1946 married Patricia Warnock from Joseph. They lived with her parents, Bill and Jean Warnock, in a little house on North Mill Street for five years, welcoming their first child, Debra Nan, in 1952. In 1956, their son, Bill, joined the family and they moved to Main Street in Enterprise, where they lived for nearly 50 years.

Mervin worked for several businesses. He and Pat, Pat’s brother, Bill Warnock, and his wife, Mary, opened the Eagle Cap Laundry. Mervin also worked for Deb Denney hauling fuel.

After eight years in the laundry business, Mervin worked at a small mill that became Boise Cascade in Joseph. He retired in 1986.

Mervin and Pat were ardent supporters of the Enterprise School system, were fixtures at home sporting events and traveled to many road games. Mervin drove vans for special school trips and served as chaperone. Mervin and Pat were members of the Enterprise Education Foundation.

Mervin loved hunting with his father and brothers, and later his son and grandsons.

He loved traveling to Hawaii, Europe, Yellowstone, Alaska and many other places. He also loved playing golf.

Mervin never knew a stranger. Wherever he went, whether at the airport in Fairbanks, Alaska, striking up a conversation with champion sled dog racer Susan Butcher, or going for groceries in Enterprise, Mervin made friends.

Mervin was a charter member of the Enterprise Elks Lodge and a life member of the VFW 4307.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Jody Zollman; his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Rick Kay; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his companion, Shirley Doud; and many family members.

His parents, brother Erval, sister Maxine; and twin sisters, Nelma and Norma, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Wallowa and Enterprise meal sites or the Enterprise VFW building fund.
