William G. Holloway, 80, of La Grande, died Oct. 31 at a local care facility. A complete obituary will be published at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel.


Ariel S. Bean

La Grande



Ariel S. Bean, 89, of La Grande, died Oct. 29. Viewing will be held at 10 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11, Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, corner of 12th and Gekeler in La Grande. Interment will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.

Ariel was born Feb. 15, 1923, in La Grande, the eldest child of George Ariel and Ellen “Nellie” (Storey) Bean. He attended school in La Grande and Union, graduating from La Grande High School in 1940. Ariel continued his education at what is now known as Eastern Oregon University, earning a BA. He received a master’s degree from the University of Oregon and a DED from Brigham Young University.

Ariel was an Eagle Scout and also earned the Bronze, Gold and Silver Palm scouting awards. He served his country in World War II and received the USAAC medal, the European Theater of Operations medal, while flying a B-17 in the 8th Air Corp, 100th Bomb Group.

Ariel spent his life in service to his church and community. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in the Sunday school program, YMMIA, Elder’s Quorum, High Priest’s group and as genealogy chairman. He was the first bishop of La Grande’s Third Ward, serving from 1970 to 1975. Ariel was also the stake clerk, stake historian and a member of the High Council. As historian he compiled several hundred pages of history, covering the period from 1950 to 2008. 

He also served in the LDS Boise Temple from the year it opened, 1985, until 2008.

On April 22, 1948, Ariel married Elaine Roundy, daughter of William A. and Olive Wale Roundy, in La Grande. She died of multiple myeloma in 1980. He married Jean Ilene Ferdinandsen on Sept. 4, 1990, in Rouge River. Jean died in 2003.

Ariel taught in the La Grande School District for 32 years. He taught U.S. and Oregon history, English and journalism. He was advisor to the Tiger Highlights until his retirement in

Ariel’s hobbies included fishing, camping, reading and writing what he would call bad poetry. He enjoyed gardening, growing and sharing his corn and tomatoes. He was generous with his time, visiting widows and the homebound.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Miller earlier this year.

Survivors include his children, Paula Fischer of Farmington, N.M., and Benjamin E. Bean of La Grande; siblings, David S. Bean and Ruth B. Veal, both of La Grande; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to LDS missionaries.
