Obituaries for November 23, 2012

Lucas, Looslie

Opal R. Lucas

La Grande

Opal Rose Lucas, 99, of La Grande, died Nov. 20 at her residence with her family by her side. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory.

Opal was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Fayette, Mo., to Albert Edwin and Myrtle (Todd) Powell. On Jan. 23, 1932, she married Phillip Lawrence Lucas in Kansas City, Mo.

For 52 years, Phil and Opal were partners in a variety of enterprises, including farming in Missouri and Iowa, trucking in the central states and owning and operating a truck stop cafe. In 1960 they moved to the Baker Valley to work as herdsmen on a dairy. Later they again operated cafes, first in North Power then in Island City. Phil was an accomplished chef. As Phil’s health diminished, they moved to La Grande, where they operated Sam’s Cab for several years. Their last business adventure was growing, buying and selling worms.

During the 1970s Opal and Phil were host family for four foreign students attending University of Eastern Oregon. Their modest home was always open to anyone in need of a room and home cooking. They were actively involved in the lives of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known to many as Grandma Opal, she would say her greatest pleasure was caring for family, friends and neighbors.

Opal’s hobbies were collecting houseplants and frogs. In previous years, she raised chickens and loved to garden, feeding her family with chicken, fresh eggs and homegrown vegetables. An accomplished seamstress, Opal sewed her children’s clothes as they grew up and made many beautiful quilts for family members. She enjoyed pets and was interested in all birds and animals. Since 2006 she was a resident at Wildflower Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, and a son, Phillip Lawrence Lucas Jr., who died at sea in 1960.

Survivors include her children, Jeanette Marshall of Cottage Grove, James Lucas of Elgin and Arthur Lucas of San Marcos, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren.

Phyllis L. Looslie

Phyllis Lucille Looslie, 82, of Elgin, died Nov. 20 of heart failure at Grande Ronde Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 27 at the Elgin Cemetery, followed by a reception for family and friends at the Elgin Community Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory.

Phyllis was born Aug. 14, 1930, in North Powder to Isham William and Miriam Blanche (Pearce) Taylor. She was raised in North Powder and attended Powder Valley School where she played volleyball. On Aug. 15, 1947, she married Dan Looslie.

Phyllis spent her entire life caring for her home and her family. She loved flowers and cooking. She had a special love for each of her grandchildren. Phyllis was a member of the Phithan Sisters Service Club in Elgin. In her earlier years she belonged to a bowling team. She also was a volunteer serving senior meals.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Ed Taylor and Jean Barnett.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Dan Looslie of Elgin; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathy Looslie of Elgin; son, Danny Looslie of Lexington; brother, Tom Taylor of Pendleton; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
