La Grande

 

Littia May Schwarz, 16, of La Grande, died Oct. 17. A complete obituary will be available at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel.

 


 

Dorothy J. Pound

Island City

1922-2012

 

Dorothy Jean Pound, 89, of Island City, died Oct. 11. A memorial service was held Oct. 16 at Loveland Funeral Chapel in La Grande.

Dorothy was born Nov. 19, 1922, in La Grande to Roy and Eva (Bay) Vandermulen. She graduated from Imbler High School and moved to Seattle, Wash. On Feb. 6, 1943, she married Robert Pound in Port Orchard, Wash. In 1992, she moved back to La Grande.

Dorothy enjoyed the outdoors. She loved to water ski and snow ski, hike and fish. She also loved riding horses and going to rodeos and parades.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Lana Schall; and siblings, Juanita Hyde and Bethel “Bill” Gruis.

Survivors include one grandchild, two great-grandchildren and three nieces and nephews.

 


 

Nora D. Smith

La Grande

1929-2012

 

Nora Dora Smith, 83, of La Grande, died Oct. 12 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A private interment will be held at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.

Nora was born March 1, 1929, to William and Sophie (Westphal) Wergin in Wanconda, Wash. She married Roy R. Smith on March 30, 1946, in Okanogan, Wash., and they moved to La Grande in December 1949. Nora attended the Assembly of God Church and enjoyed flower gardening and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband and sisters, Dixie Sutton, Violet Bowcut and Edna Seavey. 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in law, Chester and Cindy Smith of La Grande and Richard and Kathy Smith of Baker City; siblings, Antonio Wergin of Madras, Florence Hennis of Hennitta, Tex., and Anne Brueckener of Copperas Cove, Tex.; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Wesley ‘Dale’ Taylor

La Grande

1936-2012

 

Wesley “Dale” Taylor, 76, of La Grande, died Oct. 11 at a local care center. A funeral service was held Oct. 18 at the Nazarene Church in La Grande. Interment will take place Monday, Oct. 22, at the Redmond Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Known as Dale, he was born July 3, 1936, in Caldwell, Idaho, to Albert and Sarah (Hill) Taylor. He graduated from Dallas High School in Oregon and went on to receive an accounting degree. Dale was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines as a lance corporal on July 7, 1963. He was married to Geraldine Williams and later to Irene Culkins.

Dale was self-employed in the logging industry and the pilot car business. He was a member of the La Grande Nazarene Church, a charter member of the Oregon Log Truckers Association and a lifelong voting Republican Party member.

Dale enjoyed the outdoors, helping with Sunday school and spending time with friends. He spent numerous hours supporting veterans groups in every capacity. His biggest achievement was overcoming health disabilities to gain independence as a private businessman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

 


 

Arthur E. Squires

Formerly of La Grande

1935-2012

 

Arthur E. Squires, 77, of Cottage Grove and formerly of La Grande, died Oct. 6. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Andreason’s Cremation & Burial Services of Springfield.

Arthur was born Sept. 6, 1935, in Crystal Springs, N.D., to Ronald and Jennie Squires. He was raised in Yacolt, Wash. On March 1, 1957, he married Marie K. (Borger) Squires in Vancouver, Wash. She died in 1994.

He worked for Davidson Bros. from 1956 to 1987 as a rock crusher operator. While working for Davidson Bros. he was involved in several road building projects throughout Oregon and Washington. Some of the more notable projects were many roads on Mount St. Helens, the Yale and Swift Creek Dam projects, Cantan Creek, Big River, Sharps Creek and Cabbage Hill and Ladd Canyon on Interstate 84. He was very proud to have taken part in these projects.

From 1987 until his retirement Arthur worked for Portable Rock Production. In 1995 he married Jackie Squires.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie; infant son, Michael; and sisters, Anita Brooks, Janice Olstead and Althea Simpson.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie; children, Ann Younger of Vancouver, Wash., Danny Squires of Portland, Davey Squires of Cottage Grove and Stephanie Rabeh of Springfield; siblings, Marjorie Wagner of Redding, Calif., Bessie Kullburg, Susan Courtney, Maisie Harrison and Myrna Manes, all of Vancouver, Wash., and Ronald Squires of Carson, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.
