Fleenor, Follett, McCall-Hickman, Vess
Gladys J. Fleenor Enterprise 1928-2009 Gladys J. Fleenor, 81, of Enterprise, died April 4 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise is in charge of arrangements. Gladys was born March 28, 1928, to Armand and Leoncie Vigne in Enterprise. She attended school at Chesnimnus, Enterprise and graduated from Joseph. On July 18, 1946, she married Clyde Fleenor in La Grande. Gladys enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking, sewing and volunteering for the community center and VFW. Survivors include her son, Claude Fleenor and his wife, Rhonda, of Enterprise; daughter, Meleece DeRoest and her husband, Jim, of Bothell, Wash.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Kellerman of Joseph and Dora Heasty of La Grande; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clyde in 2007; and sisters, Anna VanDusen, Blanche Young and Helen Hopkins. Memorial contributions may be made to the community center in Enterprise.
Formerly of Elgin 1918-2009 Seth Warren Follett, 90, of Bremerton, Wash., and formerly of Elgin, died April 7. A graveside service will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Elgin Cemetery. There will also be a gathering for family and friends at the Stampede Hall after the burial. An online memorial can be seen at www.lewischapel.com. Lewis Funeral Chapel & Forest Lawn Cemetery is in charge of arrangements. Seth was born Aug. 23, 1918, to Warren and Cora (Batty) Follett in Cricket Flat, Elgin. He married Inger (Ericksen) April 10, 1947, in Bremerton, Wash. Seth served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. He served in Okinawa and was in Japan with the Army of Occupation for a year. He then worked as a firefighter for PSNS and Bangor Submarine Base and retired in 1975 as a captain. Seth was a member of the Kitsap County Sheriff Posse. He trained and worked with horses most of his life. He is survived by his wife, Inger of Bremerton; daughter, Renee and her husband, Paul, of Newcastle, Wash.; two step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters and was the last living member of his family generation. La Grande 2008-2009 Dylan McCall-Hickman, infant son of Jessica McCall and Marcus Hickman of La Grande, died April 6 at the Ronald McDonald House in Portland. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. today at Loveland Funeral Chapel. Dylan was born Feb. 25, 2008. In Dylan’s short time, his family says he touched the hearts of many. In addition to his family, Dylan touched people all over the United States who prayed daily for him. But he was especially dear to those involved in his care at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, as well as those at the Ronald McDonald house. Dylan’s physicians and caretakers were in constant awe of his contagious strength and sweet spirit. Dylan is survived by his parents, Jessica McCall and Marcus Hickman, both of La Grande; grandparents, Rod and Stacy McCall of La Grande, Renee McCall and Dan McCoy of Stanfield and Phillip and Dorinda Hickman; seven great-grandparents including Audrey McCall of La Grande, Pam and Jim Clark, also of La Grande, Susan Calhoun of Kelso, Wash., and Sharon Calhoun of La Grande; great-great-grandmother, Opal Burford of Union; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dylan Hickman Medical Fund at Bank of America or Ronald McDonald House charities.
La Grande 1921-2009 Jay Lewell Vess, 88, of La Grande, died April 6 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Jay was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Old Fort, N.C., to James Elmer and Pearl (Cox) Vess. He moved to this area from Old Fort 83 years ago. He married Beverly J. Mellinger in 1945. They had three children. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, family get-togethers and restoring Volkswagens. He was also a member of the Elks, Eagles and the National Rifle Association. Jay is survived by his three children, Tony Vess of La Grande, Barbara Karl of Vancouver, Wash., and Darin Vess of Gresham; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his nine siblings, Jessie, Pauline, Paul, Daniel, Clara, Carrie, Robin, Calvin and Evelyn.
