Thelma L. Hagen
Thelma Louise Hagen, 94, of La Grande, died April 26 at her home. Private graveside services will be held. Burial will be at River View Cemetery in Portland. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Thelma was born April 5, 1918, in The Dalles. Her parents were William Robert Hix and Helena (Lycan) Hix. She grew up in Friend where she attended grade school, and graduated from The Dalles High School. In 1938, she married Robert Henry Hagen.
She was employed by Ideal Dairy in Portland and Tektronix in Beaverton. She also served as a nanny in Carmel, Calif. Thelma and Robert were foster parents for over 10 years, fostering a number of children from infants to teenagers.
Thelma loved her home in La Grande. She enjoyed gardening and reading and was a champion huckleberry picker. Thelma was a member of the Four Square Church in Beaverton and the New Song Church in La Grande.
Those who knew her say she will be remembered for her strong faith and her sense of humor.
Surviving are four children, Diane Steckmest and her husband, Erik, of Bozeman, Mont., JoAnne Johnson and her husband, Frank, of Manzanita, Daniel Hagen and his wife, Jennie, of La Grande and Rand Hagen of La Grande; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three nieces and nephews.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; sister, Alys Claymier; brother, Bruce Hix; and sister, Nita Paddock.
