Gracie Clark

Gracie M. Clark, 69, of

La Grande, died at a local care center today. A complete obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is handling the arrangements.


Diana L. Gillaspie

La Grande

Diana Lynn Gillaspie, 56, of La Grande, died Friday at her home. A complete obituary will be available later. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.


Gordon Johnson

La Grande

Gordon Marion Johnson, 79, of La Grande, died at his home Friday. A complete obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is handling the arrangements.


Josephine E. C. Beckham

La Grande

1918-2009

Josephine Elizabeth Cochran Beckham, 90, of La Grande, died April 1 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. Viewings will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Josephine was born Nov. 17, 1918, to David and Lorene (Roberts) Cochran in Eldorado Springs, Mo. She moved to La Grande in January 1919. Her parents owned and operated the Cochran Boarding House in La Grande. She attended Riveria School and graduated from La Grande High School in 1936.

She married Villard Beckham May 24, 1936. A few years later they moved to Rainier and started a mink ranch. In 1971 they moved back to La Grande, where she worked as a ward clerk at Grande Ronde Hospital until she retired. Villard died Aug. 4, 1973.

Josephine enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, travel, gardening and reading. She was a member of the La Grande Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Cole Beckham of Henderson, Nev., Patricia Bee of Gladstone, Daryl and Don Wheeler of Portland, Katherine and Neil Lusby of McCleary, Wash., David and Dianna Beckham of Rising Fawn, Ga., Frances and Dale Miller of Molalla, James and Mercedes Beckham of Henderson, Nev., Jean Moss of Beaverton, Denise and Jim Botting of La Grande; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; sons-in law, Thomas Tice and Adrian Bee; great-grandson, Jason Osborne; and granddaughter-in-law, Lesley Lusby.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the American Heart Association.


Robert ‘Bob’ Garrett

Formerly of La Grande

1941-2009

Robert “Bob” Bryan Garrett, 67, of Eureka, Mont., and formerly of La Grande, died March 21 of natural causes at his home. A private memorial will be held for Bob at a later date. For more information, call Jeff at 910-2089 or Kris 541-969-8616. Nelson & Vial Funeral Home in Libby, Mont., is in charge of arrangements.

Bob was born Nov. 25, 1941, to James and Hilda Garrett in Denver. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1959, then went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Oregon College in 1971. He worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and then worked doing auto body repair.

As a young boy he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad in the mountains surrounding the Grande Ronde Valley. In high school he excelled at baseball and is remembered as quite a pitcher.

Those who knew Bob say he was a gifted artist and showed his talents through his pottery and paintings. He loved nature, particularly the beauty of the oceans and mountains, as evidenced in his artwork and the places he chose to live. Those who knew Bob say he was a charismatic man who was known for his wit and contagious laugh.

Bob is survived by his son, Jeff Garrett of Elgin; daughter Kris (Garrett) Patterson of Pendleton; sisters, Mary Hildebrandt of La Grande and Dorothy Plumley of Portland; three grandchildren; a niece; and two nephews.
