Kathryn McFarland

La Grande

Kathryn McFarland, 88, of La Grande, died Aug. 27 at a local care center. A full obituary will be available later. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.


Betty Shaffer

La Grande

Betty Shaffer, 82, of La Grande, died Aug. 24, at a local care center. A full obituary will be available later. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.


James E. ‘Jim’ Kohls

Union

1939-2009

James E. “Jim” Kohls, 70, of Union, died Aug. 25 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Union Cemetery.

Jim was born March 27, 1939, to E. H. “Ed” and Edna (Karp) Kohls in Fruita, Colo. He spent his childhood in Fruita, graduating from Fruita High School in 1957. He married Sharon M. Wolverton in Fruita and that marriage ended in divorce.

He lived and worked for the Public Service Company in the Evergreen/Kittredge area of Colorado for several years before moving to Eastern Oregon in 1973. He went to work for Oregon Trail Electric as a journeyman lineman and was service representative for Union and the outlying areas until his retirement in 1994. In 1975 he married Carol Laam in Elko, Nev.

Jim and Carol farmed for several years and enjoyed horseback riding. He enjoyed four-wheeling, fishing, camping and traveling in his motor home. They spent many winters in Quartzite, Ariz. He also enjoyed woodworking and yard work.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Kohls of Union; children, Kenneth Wayne Kohls of Meeker, Colo., Kelly Moomey of Meeker, Colo., Becky Williams of Union and Tom Mayberry of Union; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Rose Ella Kohls of Emmett, Idaho; five nephews; one niece; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Monica Goben; sister, Audry Koops; and two nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to GRH Hospice in care of Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh Street, La Grande 97850.


Richard E. Scott

Elgin

1936-2009

Richard “Dick” E. Scott, 73, of Elgin, died Aug. 26 at Grande Ronde Hospital.

Services will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Tom McDowell Park in Elgin. Casual dress is requested. Services will be followed by a potluck dinner at the Elgin Stampede Hall. For information on the dinner, call Ione Scott at 437-0265 or 805-0254. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Richard was born May 30, 1936, to Joseph and Ella (Hobbs) Scott at home on Cricket Flats near Elgin, the seventh of 15 children.

Dick left high school early to travel to California in pursuit of car racing. Those who knew him say he has always been a tremendous mechanic who enjoyed working on cars, especially his Model A Ford.

He returned to Union County where he traveled extensively as a heavy equipment operator in both road construction and logging most all of his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed the Northwest. He also took great pleasure in all of the time he spent gold mining in Alaska. He loved to read Western novels and was always surrounded by friends and family for large dinners and playing cards. Those who knew him say he was the first to offer help in times of need for anyone.

Dick is survived by companion, Becky Roberson; sons, Brent Coe of Vancouver, Wash., and Curtis Scott of Littleton, Colo; daughters, Betty Jean Church of Elgin, Dixie Walters of Carlton, Leticia “T.C.” Cardenas of Pendleton, Shon Teel of Hermiston, Tasha Roberson of Tooele, Utah, and Luci Scott of La Grande; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Cleo Austin, Verna Miller, Jack “Brigham” Scott, Florence Shaffer, Lawrence “Charlie” Scott, Ione Hinze, Beverly Jacobs, Albert “Dutch” Scott, Alberta “Mert” Eckstein and John “Sam” Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Scott and Ella (Hobbs) Scott;  and siblings, Thomas Lee Scott, Ruth Marie Scott, Ronald Scott and Wesley “Pete” Scott.


Darla Sunderman

La Grande

1940-2009

Darla Sunderman, 69, life-long resident of La Grande, died Aug. 24 at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the United Methodist Church at Fourth and Spring in La Grande. A reception at the church will immediately follow the service and a gathering at the Sunderman home will begin at 5 p.m.

Darla was born April 1, 1940, to Harvey and Genevieve (Adler) Carter. She attended schools in La Grande, and enrolled in Eastern Oregon University for two years following her graduation from La Grande High School in 1958. She married Robert Sunderman in 1960, and left school to go with him to Italy during his military service. Later, they returned to

La Grande and she finished college, graduating with a degree in education.

Darla taught English, speech and drama at La Grande High School for two years and resigned in 1970 to create and operate the Fir Street Gallery with Bob. Three years later she and Bob began their family and she devoted herself to her two sons. As they grew, she returned to Eastern to renew her teaching certificate and to La Grande High School to resume teaching English. She also coached the Mock Trial program and retired in 2002.

Darla was an athlete, having taught swimming and life-saving for many years. She loved skiing and hiking on her mountain property, and pitched in the women’s slow-pitch softball league until she was in her 40s. Recently, she earned her Master Gardener designation and always had beautiful gardens and was known for her knowledge of plants and flowers. Her garden was full of beautiful birds, which she loved feeding and watching.

An avid reader, she was rarely without a book in-hand or a book on tape in the car. Darla was an expert antique collector, trying never to miss a yard or estate sale.

The United Methodist Church was her spiritual home and the place where she was baptized, married, raised her boys and sang in the choir for many years.

Darla was a member of Chapter CO, P.E.O., Union County Retired Teachers, Master Gardeners and Impact 100. She and Bob were active boosters of the EOU theater program, the Grande Ronde Symphony and the music program at EOU.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Robert Sunderman of La Grande; sons, Nathan Sunderman and his wife, Rebecca, of Olympia, Wash., and Bradley Sunderman and his wife, Teala, of

La Grande; three grandchildren; and sisters, Barbara Nash of Pendleton and Lanetta Paul of La Grande.

Memorial contributions may be made to Impact 100, the United Methodist Church Choir Fund, the LHS Class of 1958 EOU Scholarship Fund or any charity in care of Daniels-Knopp Funeral Cremation & Life Celebration Center in La Grande.
