Marian M. Hilary

La Grande

1919-2010


Marian Marie Hilary, 90, long-time resident of La Grande, died Feb. 8 in Salem. Services are pending and will be handled by Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center.

Marian was born Nov. 16, 1919, to Charles and Adelia Rogers Sanderson in Cambridge, Idaho. She married Harold Hilary June 29, 1938, in Walla Walla. Harold died in 2002.

Marian lived in La Grande nearly her entire life and was a member of the Union Pacific Oldtimers, the Eagles, the Blue Mountain Good Sam Club and St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Sally and Dick Nusser of Salem, Susan and Dave McCall of Big Lake, Alaska, James and Naomi Hilary of La Grande, and Jerold and Jean Hilary of Portland; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kyra Lee.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Memorial Fund in care of Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center.

 


Eldon E. ‘Curly’ Millman

La Grande

1926-2010


Eldon Emery “Curly” Millman, 83, of La Grande and formerly of Cove, died Feb. 9. A celebration of life graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cove Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Curly was born Sept. 9, 1926, to Emery and Doris Millman in Cove. He married Eddith (Ike) Davis on Oct. 30, 1942, in Weiser, Idaho. Curly loved to fish, spend time in the mountains and enjoyed watching all the logging trucks going by. He was a WWII veteran with the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his sister, Patty Jackson of Alaska; children, Peggy and her husband, Bill Reed, of Union, Pug and his wife, Connie Millman, of Fruitland, Idaho, Pepper Huffman of Baker and Moe Millman of Salmon, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Curly was preceded in death by his wife, Eddith; two sisters, Opal and Lottie; and a brother, Gene.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans, Attn: Gift Processing, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

 


Melinda ‘Irene’ Sims

Formerly of La Grande

1926-2010


Melinda “Irene” Sims, 83, of Albany and formerly of La Grande, died Feb. 8 at Mennonite Village in Albany. A private family graveside service will be held.

Irene was born May 3, 1926, to Fred and Lula (Sannar) Trump in Promise. She graduated from Elgin High School with the Class of 1943. On Aug. 1, 1948, she married Joseph Carl “Jay” Sims in Reno, Nev. She worked as a clerk in a bookstore and as a merchandiser for Gibson Greeting Cards. In 1955 they moved to La Grande from Oakland, Calif. She and Jay were members of the Star Promenaders Square Dance Club for many years. She enjoyed the outdoors, crocheting, embroidery, gardening and reading.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Gary and Susan Sims of Eugene and Melinda and Vance McGowan of La Grande; four grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay, in 1986; four brothers; and one sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to any charity in care of Daniels-Knopp, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande.

 


Gloria Turley

La Grande

1944-2010


Gloria Bee Turley, 65, of La Grande, died Feb. 2 at her home. A celebration of her life will begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 20 at Calvary Chapel in La Grande.

Gloria was born Sept. 13, 1944, to Alvin A. and Bessie (Bennett) Orcutt Sr. in Dunsmuir, Calif. She graduated from Happy Camp High School at Happy Camp, Calif.

Gloria married and began her family and work history in Happy Camp. She worked many years in a veneer plant on the green end and later became a clipper operator. In the ’70s Gloria and family moved to Eastern Oregon, where she continued her mill work with Boise Cascade until she retired in 2006.

She loved the outdoors and in her younger years she did things such as flying, waterskiing, horseback riding, wind surfing, hiking and camping. She loved swimming. In 1990 she began training for and completed her first marathon. She participated and finished 13 marathons over the years, including one in Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and several in California.She spent a lot of time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gloria is survived by her brother, Wally Orcutt and his wife, Wanda; sister, Arlene Stewart; and brother, Alvin Orcutt and his wife, Karen.

Children are Devera and her husband, Ken Mitts, Ernestine (Tina) Ramberg, Heidi and her husband, Lyle Follett, and Harvey and his wife, Shawna Snapp; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alvin Orcutt Sr.; mother, Bessie (Bennett) Orcutt; and other relatives.
