Rysdam, Cannon, Culver, Graves

John E. Rysdam



John E. Rysdam, 60, of Elgin, died Feb. 28 at the Grande Ronde Hospital emergency room. A full obituary will be available later. Loveland Funeral Chapel and
Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.



Michael P. Cannon



Michael Phillip Cannon, 63, of Union, died Feb. 26 at his home. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Union Fire Station. A full obituary will be available later. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Doernbecher Hospital in care of Daniels-Knopp, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande.



Clifford N. Culver

Formerly of Elgin



Clifford Noel Culver, 85, of Ontario, died Feb. 24. There will be a memorial service later.

He was born in Pleasant Valley on May 26, 1926, to Guy N. Culver and Elmy Hesner Culver. His early schooling was in Durkee Valley.

He attended high school at Baker and graduated in Elgin in 1945. 

He joined the U.S. Navy and served in Guam during WWII. He returned to the family ranch and later moved with the family to Elgin where he worked at Reeds Mill. 

In 1949, he married Jeannine Powell at Baker. They lived two years in Elgin then moved to North Powder where they ranched until retiring. They had three sons, Bruce, Keith and Reid. They moved to Ontario in 2007 to be closer to family. 

He was a member of the Oregon Cattleman’s Association and the Catholic Church. 

He is survived by his wife, Jeannine; sons, Keith and Reid; a brother, Delmer Culver of Umatilla; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Bruce; his parents, Guy and Elmy; sisters, Elveia and Kathleen; and a brother, Marvin.

Virginia R. Graves




Virginia Rose Graves, 99, of Joseph, died Feb. 23 at Alpine House in Joseph. A graveside service was held Feb. 27 at Enterprise Cemetery.

She was born Feb. 27, 1912, in Perry to Dora Alice (VanDevener) and Luther Deering Siron.

She was a homemaker. 

She met her husband, Don, in high school. They married Nov. 18, 1933. They farmed on Upper Prairie Creek Farm for 40 years. After selling the farm, they moved to Joseph. They traveled often into Canada, to the oceans and to the national parks. They spent five winters in Arizona, where Don died April 20, 1980, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital. 

Virginia continued to live in Joseph for 10 more years. She then moved to Alpine House. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Edmund Graves. Survivors include her son, George Walter Graves of Fresno, Calif; two grandsons and their wives; three great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews; and cousins.
