Obituaries for the day of January 28, 2010 Dolores J. Williams Island City
Elgin 1928-2010 Denny Barrett Eagle McClary, 81, of Elgin, died Jan. 23 at a hospital in Boise. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the senior center, 1504 N. Albany, La Grande. Masonic services, military honors and a meal will follow. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. Denny was born April 19, 1928, to William and Edna (Barrett) McClary in Hoquiam, Wash. He was raised and educated in the Hoquiam/Aberdeen area of Washington. He joined the Navy in 1948 and was stationed in Stockton, Calif., where he met and married Phyllis Vivian Lester in 1950. He received his honorable discharge in 1952. He then relocated to Oregon. He went to work for Oregon Fish and Wildlife as a hatchery specialist. He moved from hatchery to hatchery and retired from Looking Glass in 1988. He was also a member of the Oregon National Guard from 1960 until his retirement in 1988. He enjoyed square dancing, hunting, fishing, camping and was active in the Masons, Shriners, Knights Templar, Scottish Rites, American Legion, Union County Senior Center, Elgin Food Bank and Elgin Senior Meals. He is survived by his three daughters, Debbie Cummins of McMinnville, Corky Reiman of Chehalis, Wash., and Susan McClary of Elgin; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren with one more on the way. Denny was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Shiners Hospital for Children, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland 97239-3095, or the Blue Mountain Humane Association, 3212 Highway 30, La Grande 97850.
La Grande 1928-2010
Lily was born July 19, 1928, to Dora Crosswell-Shenfield and Richard Sheffield in Radway Center Alberta, Canada. Lily came to the United States when she was 3 and lived in Boise with her grandparents, Lily and Elise Davis. When she was 13 she moved to La Grande to live with her parents and new siblings. She married Calvin Vess Dec. 27, 1944. They had three children together. She did day care and those who knew her say she loved children. She loved to crochet and made layettes for many babies, even for ones she didn’t know. Family and friends say she was known as the candy lady because everywhere she went she had a basket of candy she shared. Lily collected dolls and perfume bottles. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Calvin Steven Vess and Ann of Lake Oswego, Patty Clark and Jay of Vancouver, Wash., and Sue Holmes and Tom of La Grande; two grandsons; three granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; sisters, Karen Van Lockland and Ellen Summerville; brothers, Dick Shenfield and Floyd Shenfield; brother-in-law, Joe Haynes; and sister-in-law, Beverly Vess. She was preceded in death by her husband Calvin; and two sisters, Janice Pratt and Verna Haynes.
