Obituaries for the day of July 21, 2009 James ‘Jimmy’ Brown La Grande James “Jimmy” Brown, 49, of La Grande, died July 17 in a motorcycle accident. A complete obituary will be available later. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. Ruth L. Carter La Grande Ruth Lorene Carter, 89, of La Grande and formerly of Long Creek, died July 19 at a care center in La Grande. Graveside services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Long Creek Cemetery. A viewing will run from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the service at the Long Creek Community Church. Comstock Cove Roy D. Comstock, 86, a lifetime resident of Cove, died July 17 at his daughter’s home in Sandy after a short battle with cancer. Services will be held Aug. 1 at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. Burial will follow at the Cove Cemetery. A full obituary will be available later. Malin M. Doles Summerville Malin M. Doles, 75, of Summerville, died July 19 at a local care center. At his request there will be no public services, but condolences may be sent to Ina Doles, Grande Ronde Retirement Residence, 1809 Gekeler Lane in La Grande. A full obituary will be available later. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements. David R. McLain La Grande David Ross McLain, 81, of La Grande, died July 17 at his home. At his request there will be no public services. A full obituary will be published later. Pointer Island City Wanda Fay Pointer, 84, of Island City, died July 18 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. Burial will follow at the Summerville Cemetery. A full obituary will be published later. Purcell Elgin Sharon Ann “Ms. Kitty” Purcell, 60, of Elgin, died July 18 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Elgin Stampede Hall. Schultz La Grande Cynthia Gerda Brownton Schultz, 53, of La Grande, died July 17 at her home. A celebration of her life will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. A full obituary will be available later. Raymond ‘Ray’ H. Connolly Enterprise 1925-2009 Raymond “Ray” H. Connolly, 83, of Enterprise, died July 17 of natural causes at his home. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Enterprise Christian Church. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Raymond Lewis Richards was born Oct. 10, 1925, to Sylvia Francis Howell Richards and Walter Samuel Richards in Denver, Colo. He and his sister Alyce were placed in an orphanage in Denver when he was 3 and she was 5. They were adopted in 1933 by Mary Youngberg and Herbert Edward Connolly. At that time, he was renamed Raymond Herbert Connolly. Ray’s adoptive family eventually moved from Colorado to the Walla Walla area and from there to La Grande. He attended middle school and two years of high school at Riverside School where he and his sister were the only two students in the eighth grade. He entered his senior year at the age of 15. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on his 17th birthday. He was first stationed in Australia, then in New Guinea. He turned 18 on that island. After New Guinea, he was stationed at Cape Gloucester, Peleliu and Okanawa. He was prepared to return home at the time of the drop of the first atomic bomb but his orders were changed and he was sent to China. He remained on duty there until December 1945. He returned to San Diego where he was processed and discharged Jan. 2, 1946. He was paid $181.43 for travel money home, however, he hitchhiked and never spent a dime of money for travel. Ray returned to the Portland area where he met Marvel Schaefer. They married June 8, 1947. They relocated to Enterprise where two children were born, Diana and Gary. He was hired by Ira Snyder of Snyder Lumber Co. through a visit on the scales in front of the main office. He worked for Ira until Ira’s retirement at which time he became manager of the company. At Ira’s passing, he purchased the business from Ira’s survivors and owned the business until 1989 at which time he sold it. Ray was highly respected as a business man and always appreciated as a true gentleman. Those who knew him say he was completely honest and had the highest standards of service for himself and his employees. For a number of years when his family was young, he supplemented their income by operating the projector at the OK Theatre as well as the drive-in theater. He married Beverly Ulmer Rounsavell in Pendleton Aug. 24, 1968. They remained in their first home together until his death. In 1970, he adopted Jay William Rounsavell, 9, and Jeff Leon Rounsavell, 7. Ray was a Jaycee, served on the PTA and was on the city council. He was a member of the Elks and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved to hunt and fish and was an avid reader. Ray did enjoy traveling but loved his home most of all. Survivors include his wife, Beverly; daughter, Diana and her husband, Vernon Yoshioka, of Vancounver, Wash.; sons, Gary and his wife, Connie Connolly, of Hillsboro and Jay Connolly of Enterprise; sister, Alyce Guerassio of Enterprise; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeff; and brother, Jack Delbert Richards. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Enterprise Education District or the Soul Renovation Pay it Forward fund for the benefit of local people with emergency needs in care of Bollman’s Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St. in Enterprise 97828. Barbara Rae McDaniel La Grande 1941-2009 Barbara Rae McDaniel, 67, of La Grande, died July 17 at a local nursing center. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Song Community Church in La Grande. Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Enterprise Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. Barbara was born Oct. 27, 1941, to Glen and Wilda (Sasser) Trump in Enterprise and she was raised in Wallowa County. She graduated from Joseph High School and raised her three children in Union County. She enjoyed sports; going to church and participating in church activities; spending time with grandchildren supporting their school activities; and having family and friends around. She spent many years volunteering in the community and really enjoyed her job working for New Day Enterprises. She is survived by her brother, Lowell and his wife, Phyllis Trump, of Madras; son, John and his wife, Connie Trump, of Baker City; daughter, Jodi and her husband, Rick Hinsley, of Bonney Lake, Wash.; daughter, Glenda McDaniel of La Grande; and eight grandchildren. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gayle Trump; sister, Brenda VanArsdale; and nephew, Vince Trump. Anna Bell McLaughlin La Grande 1910-2009 Anna Bell McLaughlin, 98, of La Grande, died July 16 at her home. A celebration of life was held Monday at the Summerville Baptist Church. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory was in charge of arrangements. Anna was born Nov 4, 1910, to Joseph and Mary Ann (Rossa) Makowski in Loup City, Neb. She was a charter member of the Summerville Baptist Church and was a very outgoing and giving person, always wanting to help others. She is survived her daughter, Roberta Woollum, of Union; brother, Lawrence Makowski of White Hall, Mont.; sister, Verg Cook of Cole Camp, Mo.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son Emmette Jr.; and daughter, Mary Cecil. |
