David Mark Mayes, 43, of La Grande, died July 18 at his home. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in La Grande. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

David was born Sept. 1, 1964, to Donald and Jo Elaine Mayes in Sacramento, Calif. David’s family moved from Northern California to Haines when he was 9. David was a fourth-generation descendent of early Oregon pioneers. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1980 and graduated from Baker High School in 1982.

David attended Eastern Oregon University, graduating in 1986 with a bachelor of science in chemistry and physics. He accepted a full scholarship to the University of Washington, Seattle, where he graduated in 1990 with a Ph.D. in chemistry. He returned to Oregon, settling in La Grande where he and Dave Koza became partners in DSquared Development. He married Anna Cavinato in September 1993.

David was an avid gardener, a superb chef, remarkable woodworker and furniture maker. He was internationally known as an authority on Volkswagens.

He was a member of the Rotary International in La Grande. David was a DJ for KEOL radio where he indulged his lifelong love for all kinds of music.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Cavinato; son, Mark Warren Mayes of La Grande; stepdaughters, Christina Emma Wickman and Laura Elizabeth Wickman, both of La Grande; mother, Jo Elaine, and stepfather, Don Berry, of Haines; father, Donald, and stepmother, Angel Mayes, of New Mexico; brother, Warren and his wife Linda Mayes of Great Falls, Mont.; grandmother, Martha Scott of Riverside, Calif.; several uncles, aunts, cousins and a newphew; stepsister, Christine and her husband, Rick Williams, of Fort Mohave, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the David Mayes Memorial Scholarship Fund at Eastern Oregon University.
