La Grande 1927-2010
Len was born May 2, 1927, to Cassius and Viola Trotter Doyle in Butte, Mont. His life was spent in Montana and La Grande. During World War II, Len served in the Pacific theater with the Army and then went to serve his country in the Korean War. He was the American Legion past post commander. Len was married to Betty Rose Doyle. She died in 1972. On Nov. 16, 1973, he married Bonnie M. Murphy. He was employed with the Boise Cascade particleboard plant for 23 years. Len enjoyed camping, boating, black-powder shooting, hunting and open-wheel racing. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, George Doyle of Aberdeen, Idaho, Tom Stout of La Grande, Larry Stout of Crescent City, Calif., Sheryl Doyle of La Grande and James and his wife, Kim, of Phenix City, Ala.; sister, Jean Johnson of Challis, Idaho; brother, Clinton Shaw of Apache Junction, Ariz.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Betty Doyle; son, Leon Doyle; and brother, Doug Shaw. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel.
Elgin 1928-2010 Lawava Nelle Owens, 81, of Elgin, died suddenly July 21 in Idaho on her way home from the hospital. Funeral services are not planned. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. Lawava was born Oct. 18, 1928, to Roy and Mary Uribe Englehart at Wapato, Wash. On Dec. 23, 1951, she married James W. Owens. They made their home in Elgin for the past 22 years. Lawava’s favorite activities were crocheting, reading and hunting and fishing with James. She enjoyed caring for her home and being a mother. She is survived by her husband; two sons, James K. and his wife, Patti Owens, of Elgin and Everett W. Owens of Elgin; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles Englehart and Eugene Beach Jr.; and one sister, Tura James.
La Grande 1928-2010
Darrell was born April 20, 1928, to Ira and Eva (Clarke) Van Leuven in Baker. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the Army in 1951. He served in Japan and Korea until his honorable discharge in 1953. He returned to Oregon and on Feb. 22, 1953, he married Peggy Joyce Ruberg in Pendleton. He worked in logging transportation. In 1958 they moved to Union. In 1961 they moved to Meridian, Idaho, where he continued to be a log truck driver. He eventually purchased his own truck. In 1962, they moved to Great Falls, Mont., and began long-haul driving. The next year, he began working for the Boise Cascade Corp. as a dispatcher of trucks. In 1970 they moved to La Grande where he served as terminal manager for both the La Grande and Elgin locations until 1985. After a short retirement he returned to work for Trebar Kenworth of Boise and fully retired in 1989. The couple purchased a summer home in Hope, Idaho, on Lake Pend Oreille and he enjoyed many hours on his boat fishing the lake. They sold the summer home in 1995 when Peggy became ill. He loved watching his son participate in pool tournaments and walked every day, up to 15 miles per day. In his younger years he loved taking road trips around the country. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his children, Terry Van Leuven of La Grande and Dennis and his wife, Lori Van Leuven, of La Grande; sister, Iris Howell of Rexburg, Idaho; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; son, Doug Van Leuven; and brother, Duane Van Leuven. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Cancer Society in care of Daniels-Knopp.
La Grande 1919-2010 Elwood R. “Smoke” Wylie, 90, of La Grande, died July 20 in La Grande. A private graveside service will be held at Myrtle Trees Cemetery at Coquille later. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Smoke was born Nov. 9, 1919, to Raemy Robert and Mary Winona Robinson Wylie in Yakima, Wash. Elwood was 6 years old when his mother died. He and his younger sister, Dorothy, were taken in by their grandmother Ritter in Pagosa Springs, Colo., for several years before he followed his father to Coquille. He was separated from his sister for many years before a reunion in Myrtle Point in 2007. Elwood was known as “Sonny” to his sister and close family. He was given the nickname “Smoke” during his late teens and has answered to that name ever since. During the Depression of the 1930s, Smoke worked with his father picking ferns until he graduated grade school at the age of 14. His father and stepmother left him to fend for himself during his high school years in Coquille. He worked several jobs to pay his way through school and support himself. After graduating from high school, he married Margaret Wersh. He worked for Smith Woods Products until he enlisted in the Army 1944 during World War II. He served in the Philippines where he received a Purple Heart for battle wounds, and then on to China as a radio operator. He was honorably discharged in May 1946 and called back into service for the Korean conflict in 1950. During his time in Korea, Smoke led his unit through a minefield and captured four North Korean soldiers. He received the Bronze Star and his second Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in September 1952 and returned to Coquille where he began his 30-year career with the Coos County Bridge crew. He divorced in 1962 and married Geraldine Vanlandingham in 1990. She died in 2008. He spent the last 18 months of his life in La Grande near his daughter. He enjoyed camping, fishing, golf and round dancing. Smoke was a member of the Coquille Valley Elks, the Coquille Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Myrtle Point. Smoke is survived by his children, Jule’ and her husband, Norman Paullus, of La Grande and Terry Shawn and his wife, Aileen Wylie, of Newport; stepchildren, John Vanlandingham of Roseburg and Debbie Bushnell and her husband, Richard, of Myrtle Point; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Rae Grove; brother, Robert Wylie; wife, Geraldine Vanlandingham; and sister, Dorothy Williams.
