Wallowa 1937-2010
Ruth was born May 28, 1919, to F.H. “Fritz” and Nina (Miller) Weinhard in Wallowa. She attended school in Wallowa, graduating in 1937. On July 21, 1937, she married Hoy Carman. Together, they raised five children and ran Hereford and Angus cattle at their ranch in Wallowa. At the time of Hoy’s death in 1996, they had been married for nearly 60 years. Throughout her life, one of Ruth’s greatest loves was riding her horse. She also enjoyed collecting antiques and quilting. She attended the United Methodist Church in Wallowa and volunteered at the Wallowa Food Bank. She is survived by her sister, Anne Oveson of Wallowa; sons, Hoy F. Carman of Davis, Calif., and Kent Carman of Wallowa; daughters, Judith Bechtel of Salem and Karen Carman of Vancouver, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grand children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoy; son, Garth Carman; and sisters, Mary Zahm and Margaret McCrae.
Island City 1925-2010 James Arthur Sayer, 84, of Island City, died July 24 at a local care center from complications of diabetes. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Grandview Cemetery in La Grande. A reception will follow at Trinity Baptist Church, 2705 Gekeler Lane, La Grande. James was born Nov. 27, 1925, the youngest of four children, to Arthur and Genevieve Sayer in White Bear Lake, Minn. He became an Eagle Scout in 1941. He left White Bear Lake High School in January of his senior year in order to enter the University of Minnesota in the school of forestry. He was allowed to enter without a high school diploma because he had passed his entrance examination, a privilege extended to high school seniors during the war. He completed two years of college before serving his country during WWII in the Army in the European Theater. After the war, he completed his bachelor’s degree of education and a master’s of education. He taught in central and northern Minnesota before heading for the warmer climate of Southern California. While teaching high school in Bakersfield, he met fellow teacher, Viola May Little. They married in March 1956. He was an electronics engineer for Tektronix. He spent the rest of his working career at Tek and ended up as manager of the education and training department. In 1963, the family moved from Hillsboro to a farm between Forest Grove and Banks where James could farm in addition to working full-time. They raised filberts, strawberries and raspberries and milked 20 cows. He served on the local school board, on school budget committees, on the Boy Scout task force and ESD boards. After his retirement in 1983, he farmed full-time until they moved to the Summerville area in 1988. His wife, Viola, died in 1993. He met and married Eleanor Pickett in 1994. In 1998 they moved to Island City where he served on the Union County ESD board, was active in his church and enjoyed puttering around his garden. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor, of Island City; daughters, Anna Ashby of Newberg, Carolyn O’Brien of Rhinelander, Wis., Charlotte Daniel of Salem, Martha Meyer of Littleton, Colo., and Peggy Shouse of Denver, Colo.; step-sons, Dale Dial of Winston-Salem, N.C., Richard Dial of Port Orchard, Wash., and Jim Pickett of Las Vegas; step-daughter, Lynn Counts of Goldendale, Wash.; brother, Robert of Oakland, Calif.; sister, Helen Tilbury of Racine, Wis.; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John; and wife, Viola. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Trinity Baptist Church in care of Daniel-Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850.
Enterprise 1929-2010
Reba was born Dec. 22, 1929, to Charles and Velma (Corbin) Falconer at Corning, Iowa. She graduated from Enterprise High School in 1948. She married Elmer Wayne Storm Sept. 9, 1949, at La Grande. She worked at Holman Drug Store, Weaver Hardware and finally Enterprise School District before retiring. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Elmer, of Enterprise; sons, David and his wife, Cyndi, of Clarkston and Bill and his wife, Jenny, of Morton, Wash.; brothers, Earl and Otto Falconer, both of Milton-Freewater; sister, Norma Clough of Milton-Freewater; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
