LOCAL FUNERALS AND VISITATIONS June 19 — Betty Smithe, funeral, 11 a.m., Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center; burial, Grandview Cemetery Kevin Andrew Osterloh, 22, of La Grande, died June 12 at his home. A complete obituary will be available later. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Virginia Marie Riomondo, 88, died June 12 at a local care center. A complete obituary will be available later. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. Lewis Jack Evans, 80, of Florence and formerly of La Grande, died June 8. No services are planned locally. Jack was born Aug. 7, 1928, to Lewis E. and Frieda Evans in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School and then from Oregon State University with a bachelor of arts degree in science. He worked with the FDA in Seattle, Washington, D.C., Kansas City and in Denver. Jack retired in 1982 and settled in Florence. Jack married Barbara Dawson June 6, 1948, in La Grande. He loved to hunt deer and elk and catch fish and crab on Siuslaw Bay. He enjoyed tinkering in his shop, being on his boat and traveling in his motorhome with his wife, Barb. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Evans; children, Randie Smith of Paola, Kan., Terri Speece and her husband, Peter, of Green Valley, Ariz., Kimberly Stevens and her husband, Kirk, of Westminster, Colo.; and siblings, Jean Ginsey and her husband, Denver, of Seattle, and Jim D. Evans and his wife, Charlene, of La Grande; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a cancer foundation.
Betty P. Smithe, 87, of La Grande, died June 10 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Betty was born Aug. 6, 1921, to Charles A. Myers and Ruha G. Burden, in Indianapolis. She graduated from high school in Indiana and moved to Oklahoma for a time before settling in California. She worked as a hotel clerk in Pasa Robles, Calif., where she got to meet many movie stars. In 1945 she married Clinton L. Smithe. After he was honorably discharged from the service they lived in Albany and Eugene until 1955 when they moved to La Grande. In 1961 she starting working as an accountant for Boise Cascade, and she worked there for 25 years. She was a member of the Emblem Club and was one of the first women to become a member of the Elks. She was very active with both organizations for many years. The family had a cabin on Mount Emily and spent much time there. She enjoyed huckleberry picking, hunting and fishing. She loved to knit and was famous for her sourdough cinnamon rolls. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Clinton and Peggy Smithe of Imbler; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000 and three sisters and two brothers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Casey Eye Clinic in care of Daniels-Knopp. |
