Kloer, Wert, Clark, Hancock
Velma Jean Kloer La Grande Velma Jean Kloer, 78, of La Grande, died June 22. A viewing will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery.
Summerville 1946-2009 Charlotte Wert, 63, of Summerville, died June 22 at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Elgin. Arrangements are with Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. Charlotte graduated from high school in Vale, after which she served four years in the U.S. Army. She spent the next decade or so as a stay-at-home mom. She was a devoted mother, participating in many of her children’s activities, including Blue Birds, 4-H and church events. A resident of the Elgin-Summerville area for seven years, she moved to Eastern Oregon after retiring from the Boise Cascade paper mill in St. Helens, where she worked for 21 years. Charlotte loved spending time with her family, gardening, shopping, traveling, reading, learning and the adventures life had to offer. She always had an extraordinarily positive outlook on life, even when she was diagnosed with and fighting cancer Survivors include her husband, Ernie Wert of Summerville; children, Bill Reeds of Veneta and Susan Wagoner of Summerville; stepchildren, Brian Wert of Deer Lodge, Mont., and Elissa Sherlock of Talent; and five grandsons and other relatives. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oregon Cancer Society in care of Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850.
Formerly of Union County 1921-2009 Reba Clark, 87, of Beaverton and formerly of Union County, died Jan. 6 from complications of Parkinson’s disease. A graveside memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hillcrest Cemetery in La Grande. Reba’s niece, Terry Thomas, will officiate. Reba was born July 10, 1921, in North Powder to Bertrand and Mary Kail. She was raised in and attended school in La Grande and surrounding communities. She married Charles C. (Ced) Clark on Christmas Day 1939. Reba was active in the First Christian Church and was the church secretary until she returned to college in 1954. She earned a master’s degree in education and taught at Greenwood and Central grade schools until she retired in 1984. Reba and Ced were very active in the La Grande Elks and the La Grande Country Club. Reba loved to write poetry and short stories. The year she turned 80 the family had a collection of her works published. After Ced died in 1980 and Reba retired from teaching, she moved to Beaverton to be closer to family. Survivors include daughters, Judith Tiller of Healsberg, Calif., and Diane Jones and husband, Tom, of Beaverton; two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren; sister, Retha Bowman of La Grande; a niece, two nephews and other family members.
La Grande 1934-2009 Ted R. Hancock, 74, of La Grande, died June 24 at his home. A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hermiston Cemetery. Arrangements are with Burns Mortuary of Hermiston. Ted was born Nov. 30, 1934, in Denton, Texas, to David and Viola Hancock. He was the third child in the family. He came to Oregon in 1943 to live with his father who was working in the shipyards during the war. When Ted turned 18 he joined the Ironworkers Local No. 29 in Portland. He completed a three-year apprenticeship training and received his Journeyman Ironworker card. Proud to be a union ironworker, Ted was a member of Local No. 29 for 55 years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Sharon Hancock; son, Grant Hancock; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Dean Hancock in 1990, and siblings, David Jr., Barbara Ann, Joel D., Jerry N. and Kenneth D.
