Wilma Klaus Formerly of La Grande 1907-2011
She was born Jan. 22, 1907, to Henry and Anna Backer in Crandon, S.D. She was from a family of 11 children. One sister died as an infant. She married John H. Bruins Oct. 8, 1924. They divorced in 1949. She married Jay Klaus in the ’70s. They divorced a short time later. She raised of family of 10 children. The eight surviving are John H. Bruins of Walterboro, S.C., Oscar E. Bruins of Heber Springs, Ark., Myrna Woodell of La Grande, Marilyn Winterton of La Grande, Lila May of Las Vegas, Sally Roe of La Grande, Sharon Belcher of Portland and Jim Bruins of Hermiston. She is also survived by lots of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children, Carolyn Odermott and Cecil Bruins, both of Nampa. She and John came to Oregon in a big Army truck from their farm in South Dakota in 1946 with eight of their children and all their belongings that hadn’t been auctioned off. Wilma had polio at the age of 3. Her granddad paid for the surgery or she would never have walked again. She ended up handicapped, but active all her life. She was a homemaker. Her education consisted of eight years of school. She lived on a farm after getting married and coming to Oregon in 1946. She enjoyed baking homemade bread and made pretzels, also called elephant ears. She made her own mincemeat for pies and crocheted afghans. She loved to play cards and put puzzles together until the past month. She made many quilts.
La Grande 1946-2011
Dayle was born July 27, 1946, to Sherman and Iona Murray at Tillamook. She grew up in Eastern Oregon. She graduated with honors from La Grande High School and graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Eastern Oregon State College. She married Michael Howard in July 1964 in Weiser, Idaho. They had one son, Michael Bruce Howard Jr. They divorced in 1970. She married Warren Jennings in October 1973 at Elko, Nev. They had one son, Wade Tucker Jennings. She pursued a career as a mental health counselor, specializing in drugs and alchohol for Union and Baker counties. She later helped her husband, Warren, run Corner Store Computers in La Grande. She received a disability retirement pension in her early 50s and continued to reside in La Grande until she died. Dayle was a member of the EOSC drama club, AA and NA. Survivors include children, Michael Bruce Howard Jr. and his wife, Jessica, of Union, and Wade Tucker Jennings of La Grande; siblings, Lavina Greenough of La Grande, Aline Yeakley of Walla Walla and Nolan Murray of Birch Bay, Wash.; nine gradchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lynn Murray; parents, Sherman and Iona Murray; and husband, Warren Jennings in 2007.
