Obituaries for the day of June 30, 2009 Carl E. Pemberton Union Carl E. Pemberton, 72, of Union, died June 28 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. A complete obituary will be published later. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Union 1936-2009 James L. Allenbaugh, 73, of Union, died June 24 at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise. At his request there will be no services. A family gathering will be held later in the summer. Accent Funeral Home in Meridian, Idaho, is in charge of arrangements. James was born June 11, 1936, to Edward and Maxine Allenbaugh in Anchorage, Alaska. He married Donna Brunton in Ellensburg, Wash. They later divorced. On March 6, 1999, he married Barbara Williams in Winnemucca, Nev. Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Union; son, Rick of Ellensburg; daughter, Carrie of Seattle; stepchildren, Cathy Schroeder, Loretta Williams-Lee, Peggy Titus and Karen Waliser; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Irene Beslow.
La Grande 1931-2009 Joel Lawrence Richardson, 77, formerly of La Grande, died June 24 at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Calif., due to a sudden illness and complications after a surgery. A memorial service took place this morning at Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church. McCormick & Son Mortuary in Laguna Hills, Calif., is in charge of arrangements. Joel was born Sept. 6, 1931, in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1949 and from University of Oregon in 1953. He served as an Army chaplain in Korea after the cease-fire. He married Martha Van Camp Jan. 19, 1957. They settled in Salem where Lawrence worked in underwriting for State Farm insurance for 34 years. They enjoyed raising three daughters, Sarah “Sally” Elizabeth, Nancy Louise and Julie Janette. Lawrence was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Salem for many years and more recently a member of Laguna Niguel Presbyterian. He enjoyed Bible study, men’s groups and singing. He was ordained a deacon and an elder of the Presbyterian Church USA. He loved to travel, appreciated music — especially classical opera — and enjoyed hiking in the mountains. Those who knew him say he was a mentor and a friend to many. He pursued advanced education and received many training degrees in his profession. He battled Parkinson’s disease for nearly 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Martha; daughters, Sarah and her husband, Gordon Hagena, Nancy and her husband, Walt Linaweaver, and Julie and her husband, Col. Phil Smith; five grandchildren; and many other relatives. Formerly of Wallowa County 1922-2009 Lena Wise, 86, of Stites, Idaho, and formerly of Wallowa County, died June 16 at a hospital in Cottonwood, Idaho. Her church hosted a memorial service and potluck June 23 at the Kooskie City Park in Idaho. Lena was born Dec. 22, 1922, to Wayman and Millie Larkin in Minam. She married Chet Wise Nov. 5, 1945. Lena loved hunting and was an active member of her church. She also wrote songs, short stories and poetry. Her favorite hobby was music, especially playing her guitar. On holiday get-togethers, nearly everyone in the family had a musical instrument, so there was a lot of music around. She is survived by her husband of 64 years in Stites; children, Lee and his wife, Kathy Wise, of Grangeville, Idaho, daughter, Lenta and her husband, Chuck Hall, of Kamaih, Idaho, and Yvette Wise of Cottonwood; three sisters, Evelyn Wise of Sutherlin, Barbara Raines of Wallowa and Bethel Stubblefield of Wallowa; brother, Jack Larkin of Boise; brother-in-law, Perry Wise of Emmett, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews.
Alicel A celebration of life for Charlie Scroggin of Alicel, who died April 18 in Miami, Fla., will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Charlie’s family home, 65301 Imbler Road. Turn east on Jansen Lane between Alicel and Imbler. The family is looking forward to seeing all of Charlie’s friends and family. Light refreshments will be served.
