Geneva ‘Jean’ Burford

Union

1938-2012

 

Geneva Marie “Jean” Burford, 73, of Union, died March 11 at a local care center after a battle with cancer. A celebration of life get-together for family and friends is planned soon. Details will be announced. Sign the online guest book at www.danielsknopp.com. 

Jean was born May 20, 1938, to Meek Henry and Myrtle (George) Johnson in Oolagah, Okla. The family moved to Union when she was a teen and she was educated in Cove and Union, graduating with the Class of 1957 in Cove.

On Nov. 2, 1956, she married Larry Burford at the Cove Baptist Church. She worked as the deputy tax collector for the Union County Tax Assessor’s office she retired 10 years ago. 

Jean loved the outdoors and enjoyed steelhead fishing, hunting, sports and spending time at the family cabin in Troy. She liked to knit and loved to refinish antique furniture. Her family says she never missed one of her grandchildren’s events and loved and supported her family.

Survivors include her husband, Larry of Union; daughter, Vicki Jean Brown of Baker City and Ricky Dean Burford of Union; siblings, Genevive Johnston of Gentry, Ark., Unalea Colville of Springdale, Ark., Floyd Johnson of Haines and Sonny Johnson of Cove; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other relatives.   She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Berniece Johnston. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wasser House in Walla Walla, Wash., which served as home away from home for the family while Jean was receiving treatment.

 


Gail A. Scott

La Grande

1962-2012

Gail Anne Scott, 49, of La Grande, died March 11 of natural causes at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of her life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Damascus Road Ministries Church in La Grande. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Gail was born Nov. 10, 1962, in Pendleton to Alson and Aloy (Holmes) Coles. She attended Elgin High School in Oregon and Fort Jones High School in California. 

Gail was married to Larry Scott from 1984 to 1997. Before her illness, she was employed with Outdoor R.V.

Those who knew Gail say she showed talent with the art work she did. She enjoyed car races, music, movies, books and large puzzles. Gail served her country in the United States Army from 1979 to 1981.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Aloy and Tim Collingwood of La Grande; four siblings, KaCee Clinkenbeard of Arlington, Wash., Jim Coles of La Grande, Joy Coles of La Grande and Loree Bolin and her husband, Tracy, of La Grande; nine aunts and uncles; 15 nieces and nephews; and 24 cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father and step-mother, Alson and Maryellen Coles; and her grandparents.

 


Earl E. Huffman

Halfway

1927-2012

 

Earl Edmond Huffman, 85, a long-time resident of Island City, died March 13 in Halfway.

He was born July 19, 1927, in Halfway.

He worked in saw mills and in the logging industry most of his life. Earl loved to fish and also enjoyed hunting. 

He is survived by two brothers, Sam Horrell of Elgin and George Horrell of Richland; and numerous nephews and nieces. 

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his wife, Janet.
