Lawrence, Hoadley, Zimmerman
Helen Lawrence Elgin Helen Lawrence, 84, of Elgin, died this morning at her home in Elgin. A full obituary will be available later. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.
La Grande 1938-2009 Shirley Hoadley, 71, of La Grande, died March 22 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. Burial will follow at Cove Cemetery. Viewing will run from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Daniels-Knopp. Shirley was born March 4, 1938, to John and Jessie (Murchison) Woodell in La Grande. She attended schools in Union and La Grande. On Sept. 17, 1955, she married Harry Hoadley at the First Christian Church in La Grande. She worked for Montgomery Wards and for a tavern in Union owned by her sister and brother-in-law before becoming a stay-at-home wife and mother. She loved her home and working with the flowers in her garden. She did all types of arts and crafts, including ceramics and painting. She bowled on a league for a few years and was the family events planner and always had lots of family around her home. Survivors include her husband, Harry Hoadley of La Grande; son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Patricia Hoadley of La Grande; son, Monty Hoadley of La Grande; brother and his wife, Clifford and Myrna Woodell of La Grande; sister and her husband, Bette and Ronald Puckett of Cove; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by brother, Irvin “Bud” Woodell; and sisters, Lee German, Cora Mae Denton and Cleo Hudson. Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.
Union 1934-2009 Jack Dean Zimmerman, 74, of Union, died March 19 in Boise. No public services are planned at this time, but details about a future service will be available later. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements. Jack was born Oct. 27, 1934, one of 18 children to Jack Dean and Marie (Barlow) Zimmerman in Sac City, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Iowa before enlisting in the Air Force. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars and retired as a master tech sergeant. After his retirement from the service he moved to Warrenton and was the regional manager for Sears & Roebuck Co. He later owned a charter fishing company and was harbor master for Hammond and Warrenton. After his retirement from these positions he moved to Union where he became very active in the community. He served on the city council, was chairman of the Carnegie Library Board for many years and was very active with the VFW Post in Union, serving as commander. He was an advocate for veterans affairs, including but not limited to helping to get the Regional VA Clinic to La Grande. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Zimmerman of Union; son, Joe Zimmerman of Boise; daughters, Margaret “Peg” Wallis of Burns and Debra Goosev of New Pine Creek; four grandchildren; and other relatives. Memorial contributions may be made to the Union VFW or the VFW Food Bank in Union.
