LOCAL FUNERALS AND VISITATIONS

Charlene Gaskin, 68, of Union, died Feb. 23 at her home. Services were held Feb. 28 at Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Charlene was born April 23, 1941, to Clarence and Pearl (Golden) Cavin in Kingsport, Tenn. She married Orin Gaskin Jr. in 1960 in Spokane.

She enjoyed trips to Wildhorse and greatly enjoyed Christmas and decorating. She loved Country and Western and gospel music, singing, planting flowers and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Orin; son, Frank Gaskin of Union; daughter, Connie and her husband, Jim Twisselman, of Union; sisters, Irene Burrows of Union and Brenda Henderson of Ahwahnee, Calif.; brother, Gerald Cavin of Manteca, Calif.; mother, Florence Mitchel of Church Hill, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.



Lige Anderson McKinney III, 67, died Feb. 16 at Grande Ronde Hospital. Services will begin at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Rivershore Bar and Grill, 1900 Clackamette Drive, Oregon City. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lige was born Oct. 26, 1942,  to Lige Anderson McKinney II and Josephine O. (Logsdon) McKinney in Carus.

He was a superintendent in the paper mill, and was a commissary man in the Navy. When he was stationed on Guam, he was an Enlisted Men’s Club cook, and before that he was stationed on the USS Astabula. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and in his younger years he was very active with 4-H.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, of Oregon City; children, Michele McKinney and her husband, Troy Simmons, of Cove and Todd (Irene) McKinney, of Oregon City; brother, William C. McKinney of Redmond; sisters, Bonnie Cogburn of Canby, Mary McKinney of Canby and Jenny Leonard of Utah; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.



Theodore McLaughlin Jr., 73, of La Grande, died Feb. 22 at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Baker City. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Summerville Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Theodore was born May 28, 1936, to Theodore and Hazel McLaughlin in Alliance, Neb. He attended early years of school in Nebraska, moving to Summerville in 1954 where his family farmed.

Ted graduated from Imbler High School in 1956 and was the president of the FFA chapter there. Later the family moved to La Grande.

He married Della Doud on May 16, 1961, at the Summerville Baptist Church. They later divorced. Ted and Della had two children, Tracy Len and Amber Juwane. Ted worked at various jobs around Union County. He was as an avid hunter and fisherman. As a member of the National Hunters Association, he read about and studied re-loading.

Ted liked to ride his bicycle throughout Union County. He often could be seen riding along Island Avenue, towing his orange trailer, along with his companion, Lorraine Kelley.


William Daniel “Bill” Reagan, 86, of Elgin, died Feb. 24 at his home. A celebration of life service will begin at

1 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Elgin. A potluck will follow at the church. Burial will be at the Elgin Cemetery. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.

He was born May 8, 1923, the youngest of 13 children to Lemuel Edward Reagan and Elizabeth Paralee Chandler Reagan in Fairfield, Idaho, on the Camas Prairie. He attended Manard Grade School and Camas County High School, graduating in 1941.

He married Mary Kendall of Brogan April 5, 1942, at the family home in Fairfield. They operated a wheat farm on the Camas Prairie until 1954 when they sold the farm and moved to Vale. There they continued to farm and operate a small dairy. He also worked for the Vale irrigation district in 1957 through 1962. At that time they purchased a ranch in Elgin and he worked at the Boise Cascade Stud Mill in Elgin until 1970. They sold the ranch in Elgin and purchased a ranch in Union in the High Valley area in 1972, where they ranched until retirement. They sold the ranch to their son, Lloyd Reagan, in 1976. They moved to their final home in Elgin in 1977.

Those who knew Bill say he was a man much loved for his quick and quirky wit and his sense of humor. His family and friends say they looked forward to sitting with him and swapping tall tales, all of which had a factual basis. His great- grandchildren would gather at his feet to listen to his jokes and stories and on special times an old song or two.

He is survived by two sons, Lynn and his wife, Kathy Reagan, of Willow Creek, Vale, and Lloyd and his wife, Linda Reagan, of High Valley; two daughters, Terryl and her husband, John Davis, of Elgin and Robin and her husband, Tawin Compton, of Pilot Rock; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. His wife of 56 years preceded him in death in 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; eight sisters; and three grandsons, Jason Reagan, Jeffrey Reagan and Gregory Reagan.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice, the American Cancer Society or the American Kidney Foundation.



Lon T. Whitley, 61, of La Grande, died suddenly Feb. 23 at his home. No services are scheduled at this time. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Lon was born Aug. 13, 1948, to Lowell and Elaine (Coleman) Whitley in Portland. He was a truck driver and never married.

He was a guitar player, rode Harleys and was a handyman. Those who knew him say he could build and fix anything. He loved swimming and spending time in the outdoors.

Lon was survived by his mother, Elaine Livingston of La Grande; son, Jason Whitley of La Grande; brother, Ray and his wife, Dee Whitley, of Wickenburg, Ariz.; and stepsisers, Leah Lassley of La Grande, and Cheryl and her husband, Joe Venutolo, of La Grande.
