Jane Thompson Formerly of Elgin
Jane Thompson, 88, of Longview and formerly of Elgin, died March 2. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Elgin Cemetery.
Donald A. Hindman La Grande 1914-2012
Donald A. Hindman, 97, of La Grande, died March 2 at a local care center. At his request there will be no services. Don was born at the family’s old Durkee ranch house on Oct. 21, 1914. He was the youngest of 10 children. He owned a farm in Durkee for several years. He was hired as a locomotive fireman on the Union Pacific Railroad and promoted to engineer in La Grande. Don married his childhood sweetheart, Ida Gerry, in 1938. Don and Ida raised seven children. Those who knew him say he was an honest and generous man who believed that a handshake was as good as his word. He is survived by his children, Jack Hindman and his wife, Mercy, Sue Wirth and her husband, Elwood, Patty Hindman, Judy Van Dyke and her husband, Chuck, Shirley Bloomer, Toni Alford and her husband, Joe, and Steve Hindman; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, in 1990. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Heart Association in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande OR 97850.
