LOCAL FUNERALS AND VISITATIONS

Jack Greenough, 72, of Ontario and formerly of La Grande, died May 24 at an Ontario hospital. A full obituary will be available later. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.


Juanita Mae Messick, 81, of Elgin, died May 26 at a local care center. A full obituary will be available later. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.


Mary Paroz, 78, of Imbler, died the morning of May 26 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A full obituary will be available later. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.


Christina Vanderpool, 91, of La Grande, died May 24. A full obituary will be available later. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.


A potluck for the family and friends of Arthur George Warren, 73, of Union, who died April 30 in La Grande, will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Union Methodist Church. A full obituary was published earlier and can be found at www.danielsknopp.com.


Barbara Louise Applebee, 68, of La Grande, died May 13 at OSHU in Portland.

Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. June 6 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 11206 McAlister Rd., Island City. Dedication of the grave and burial was held earlier. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara was born Oct. 10, 1940, in La Grande to Lester H. and Catherine (Buckley) Shelton of Cove. She attended the Lower Cove School in Cove and graduated with the Class of 1958.

She married Francis Seymour in 1959, and they later divorced. She married Gilbert Applebee in 1989, and this marriage ended in 2002.

She worked as a waitress at the Husky Truck Stop, later known as Flyin’ J, from 1965 to 1982. She was a Watkins Product distributor for many years. She worked at Wal-Mart as a door greeter for nine years until her health forced her to quit.

She was known as the “Butterfly Lady” because she always wore butterfly hair pins.

In 1993, she became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was very active as a Visiting Teacher as well as a CTR6 Teacher in the primary. She was also active in the community in Oregon Rural Action, Great Decisions and the Democrat committee.

She loved cooking, eating food and collecting recipes. Her favorite color was red, and she loved butterfly everything, cats and Dachshunds.

Barbara is survived by her son, Frank Seymour of Ukiah, Calif.; her-adopted family, Leigh “Lee” and Lisa Wright and their two children of

La Grande; and many other close friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Loveland Funeral Chapel to help defray the expenses of the funeral.


Clarence Herman Everidge, 88, of Baker City and formerly of La Grande, died May 21 at the Veterans Hospital in Boise. A memorial service will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at the Elkhorn Baptist Church, 3520 Birch St. Pastor Mark Looney will officiate.

Herman was born Feb. 10, 1921, to Arthur Frank and Nannie Elizabeth (Teal) Everidge in Columbus, Ga. He left school in the ninth grade and in 1942 joined the U.S. Army. Herman was stationed overseas in the Southern Philippines and was awarded two Bronze Service Stars along with other medals. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

While still in the service, Herman married Imogene Spencer in Wapato, Wash., on July 4, 1943. The couple raised three children: Roberta, Vernon and Frank. Imogene and Herman enjoyed almost 66 years of marriage.

After his service in the Army, Herman lived mostly in Eastern Oregon working in the logging industry. He settled in La Grande in 1972, where he finally retired as an accomplished mechanic for logging companies.

In 2004, Herman and Imogene moved to Baker City to be near their daughter.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows, VFW, Union County Search and Rescue and the American Legion.

Herman liked to fish and hunt. He was also a musician and played the mandolin and fiddle.

Herman is survived by his wife, Imogene Everidge of Baker City; daughter, Roberta Smith and her husband, John, of Baker City; son, Vernon Everidge and his wife, Terry, of La Grande; son, Frank Everidge of La Grande; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, A.F. Everidge; mother, Nannie Elizabeth Everidge; two brothers, Cecil and Elmer; sister, Nannie Lee Etheridge; and granddaughter, Teresa Everidge.

Memorial contributions may be made to any charity in care of Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City 97814.
