Harold L. Dickenson

Cove

1926-2009

Harold LeRoy Dickenson, 82, of Cove, died May 22 at OHSU. A graveside service was held today at Cove Cemetery. Lunch followed at the Cove Sportsman Club. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Harold was born July 25, 1926, to John Marion and Anna Elizabeth (Mohrland) Dickenson in Walla Walla, Wash. He graduated from Pendleton High School, and married Gilah Ferguson Dickenson Sept. 28, 1947, in Pendleton. He was employed as a lumber grader in the saw mill. He has lived in Union County for 55 years, moving from Pendleton.

Harold enjoyed doing leatherwork, making pack saddles, chaps, bridles and other things. Those who knew him say he was wonderful at woodworking and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trap shooting.

He was a member of the La Grande Gun Club and Union and Cove Sportsman clubs. He was also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Those who knew him say he had a great sense of humor, loved spending time with the grandchildren, and every Friday he would take the kids in for a snack. When camping with the grandchildren, he would make eggs “made to order.”

He is survived by his wife, Gilah; three children, Tannis Dickenson of Stanfield, Teresia and her husband, Leonard Porfily of Summerville and Trudy Elliott and her husband, Kenny, of Middleton, Idaho; sister, Bette and her husband, Ken Capper, of Hermiston and Mary Jane Daggett of Hermiston; brother, Dean and his wife, Naomi Dickenson, of La Grande; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Memorial contributions in Harold’s memory may be made to the Veteran’s Hospital or Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.


Betty L. Golden

Formerly of La Grande

1950-2009

Betty Lee Golden, 59, of Woodburn and formerly of

La Grande, died May 23 in Portland surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma.

A memorial celebration will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute on the campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay.

Betty was born Jan. 10, 1950, to Donald and Muriel (Lund) Ewen in La Grande. She received her education in La Grande, where she graduated with the Class of 1968. Following high school, she worked at First National Bank.

In 1971, Betty made the move to Portland, where she gained employment as an operations clerk at the Industrial Branch of First National Bank. While at First National, she met Steve Golden. Betty and Steve married July 19, 1975, in Seattle. They remained in Portland until moving to Pendleton in 1977.

On April 30, 1978, Betty gave birth to her only child, Maegan. In 1983, Betty and her family moved to Coos Bay. While in Coos Bay, Betty worked as a data processing manager for Security Bank, and later as a travel agent for Anytime Travel.

In 1985, Betty was elected to serve on the school board for the Coos Bay School District. She served for many years before moving to Woodburn in 2000 to be closer to her family. While in Wooburn, Betty was employed by Pete Ward Travel and most recently, West Coast Bank as a loan operations supervisor.

Betty celebrated life by playing golf, cooking and baking, traveling, shopping and spending time with her family. She also kept very active throughout the years supporting and attending Miss Coos County events.

Betty is survived by her loving husband of almost 34 years, Steve; daughter and son-in-law, Maegan and Troy Zell of Portland; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Betty Ewen of Nashville, Tenn.; sister, Dianne Ewen of Woodburn; step-sons, Daniel and James Golden of Portland; and three grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, Betty’s family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Miss Coos County Scholarship Foundation in care of Maureen Everetts, 1475 Juniper Ave., Coos Bay 97420.


Jack Greenough

Formerly of La Grande

1937-2009

Jack Greenough, 72, of Ontario and formerly of

La Grande, died May 24 at an Ontario hospital. A memorial graveside service will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Cemetery in La Grande.

Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Jack was born Feb. 16, 1937, to Louis Elsworth and Erna Karen (Nielsen) Greenough in Perry. He entered the service in 1954 and separated in 1958 as a petty officer. He was a sonar operator on the destroyer USS Sproston. He later worked as a laborer for UPRR.

Jack lived in the La Grande area on and off all of his life. He was interested in sports history and political history.

He is survived by his brothers, Glenn Greenough and Stanley and his wife, Lavina Greenough; four nephews; one niece; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law.


Robert ‘Bob’ Herrmann

Formerly of La Grande

1935-2009

Robert “Bob” Lee Herrmann, 74, of Bend and formerly of

La Grande, died peacefully May 25 from heart failure. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday with a viewing running between 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. at the LDS Church at 60800 Tekampe Road, Bend.

Bob was born March 4, 1935, to William and Mary Herrmann. He was the youngest of four children. His family moved to La Grande when he was eight months old. He lived in La Grande until 1987 when he moved to Bend where he spent the rest of his days.

Bob was a 1953 graduate of La Grande High School and also attended Greenwood Elementary School and La Grande Junior High. He worked for many years in both the La Grande and Bend School districts and retired in 1993 as transportation supervisor of the Bend LaPine School District.

He was a member of the Oregon National Guard and proudly retired with 24 years of service in 1987. He was a member of the LDS Church, The Golden Age Club and the cribbage club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the outdoors, cribbage, Sudoku, daily crossword puzzles and being around family and friends.

Bob is survived by his wife of 49 years, Charlotte Herrmann; his two daughters, Lori Bloom of La Grande and Teresa Herrmann of Bend; his two sons, Scott Herrmann of Redmond and Brian Herrmann of Utah; brother, Lawrence Hermann; sister, Rosalie Gilson; son-in-law, Richard Bloom; daughter-in-law, Stacie Herrmann; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jeanna; and his brother, Olin Hermann.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital or Partners in Care, formerly Hospice of Bend and LaPine.


Juanita ‘Nita’ Messick

Elgin

1928-2009

Juanita “Nita” Mae Messick, 81, of Elgin, died May 26 at a local care center. Memorial services will be held at the Church of Christ, 2107 Gekeler Lane, at a date to be announced later.

Juanita was born March 8, 1928, to Gordon and Effie (Self) Corn in Tahlequah, Okla. She married Garland “Cal” Messick Nov. 11, 1972, in Carson City, Nev. He died in 2006.

She is survived by her son, Ronald “Ron” Austin of Union; sister, Maxine Epperly of Wister, Okla.; brother, Frank Corn of Sapulpa, Okla.; and two grandsons.


Mary A. Paroz

Imbler

1931-2009

Mary Adele Rollins Paroz, 78, of Imbler, died May 26 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Summerville Cemetery Chapel. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the Jewel Rebekah Lodge No. 96 at the IOOF hall in Summerville.

Mary Adele was born Feb. 23, 1931, to Halbert and Ruth (Littreal) Rollins in La Grande. She graduated from Imbler High School and went to work for Pacific Northwest Bell for over 30 years.

She enjoyed sewing and working in her rose garden.  She married Kenneth Sanderson and they had two sons. She later married Leon Paroz and they had one son.

She is survived by her husband, Leon Paroz of Imbler; sons, Dwayne Sanderson of Post Falls, Idaho, and Claren Paroz of La Grande; step-daughter, Susan Freeman of Baker City; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Thelma Jean Rollins of La Grande. She was preceded in death by her son, Russell Sanderson; parents; and a brother, Worth Rollins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jewel Rebekah Lodge No. 96 or any other charity. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.


Christina Vanderpool

La Grande

1917-2009

Christina Vanderpool, 91, of La Grande, died May 24 at a care center. No public services are planned but a graveside service will be held at a later date.

Christina was born Dec. 7, 1917, to Samuel Houston and Odie (Procter) Clevenger in Arkansas. On Oct. 23, 1935, she married Ernest James Vanderpool in Missouri. In 1961 they made their way west to La Grande. She was a homemaker that truly enjoyed cooking until illness did not allow her to. She also collected cookbooks of all kinds.

Survivors include her children, Vi Vanderpool of La Grande, Theta LeVasseur of Lostine and Kenneth Vanderpool of La Grande; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and other relatives.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oregon Lung Association, Emphysema Research in care of Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande.
