LOCAL FUNERALS AND VISITATIONS

May 9 — Richard Kunkle, service, 10 a.m., St. Katherine Catholic Church, Enterprise

Lee Hollis DeGrofft, 87, of Joseph, died May 2. At his request, there will be no services. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Craig-Haley, 95, of La Grande, died April 20 at Wildflower Lodge in La Grande.

At her request, there will be no service. Disposition was by cremation. Her ashes will be spread under the old apple trees in the orchard at the old Savage homestead on Anthony Creek.

Dorothy was born May 20, 1913, the youngest of four children to Jacob and Emma Savage at Wyaconda, Mo. Shortly after her birth, the family moved from Missouri to Beaver Creek in Baker County.

Due to poor farming conditions, they moved a second time to a homestead on Anthony Creek in Union County, six miles from North Powder.

Dorothy attended school at Mount Carmel on the Anthony Lakes Highway. Her teacher was Faye Christensen for the first few grades and Louise Dodson for the other grades. She was a graduate of North Powder High School where she was a star basketball player on the Badgers’ girls team. Her high school nickname was “War Whoop.”

She married Jack Craig, also of North Powder, in 1933 at Walla Walla.

Their marriage lasted until Jack’s death 47 years later. The couple lived in several places, including North Powder, Sumpter, Portland and the farm on Wolf Creek near North Powder. They were living at North Powder when Jack died.

She was involved and an active, hard-working person. She worked at Peterson’s grocery store at North Powder for a number of years.

She married Loren C. Haley of Florence, a former Sumpter resident, in 1983 at St. Petersburg, Fla.

She enjoyed playing pinochle and bridge with her friends. She had favorite mushroom and huckleberry patches and usually came home with a good pick.

Dorothy was an excellent cook and provider. She also was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star. Most of all she was a loving and caring person who had many friends, young and old, her family said.

Her favorite expression was: “What goes around comes around.” She truly loved and enjoyed telling the stories of her travels around the world with her second husband, Loren.

Survivors include her children, Larry Craig of North Powder, Steven Craig of Pendleton and Terry Craig of Cove; one grandson and two granddaughters; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents, Jake and Emma Savage; 7-month-old son, Thomas; brothers, Otho and Ed Savage; her older sister, Fern Laurance; and her second husband, Loren Haley.

Peggy Arlene Nolan, 84, of La Grande, died April 11 at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A memorial service will take place at North Powder Cemetery at a later date. Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Peggy was born Dec. 17, 1924, to George and Hazel (Lukus) Woodhams. She worked most of her life in food service as a cook and waitress. She enjoyed knitting, handwork and painting.

Peggy is survived by her daughter, Sharon Dinning of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; sister, Jean Pettigrew of Sumter, S.C.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Nolan; son, Thomas Nolan; brother, Virgil Woodhams; and sister, Dolores Funky.
