May, Carter, Cross, Green
Glen Herbert May, 95, of La Grande, died May 7 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A full obituary will be available later. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Austin “Bear” Daniel Carter, 12, of Union, died April 29 of unknown causes at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Union High School gym. Dress will be casual. Burial will be at the Union Cemetery. Austin was born Dec. 2, 1995, to Christian Carter and Connie Steel in La Grande. Those who knew “Bear” considered him an amazing young man. He was known for his charm, laughter and quick wit. Bear shared his heartfelt smile to those around him. He will be remembered atop his unicycle, giving a thumbs-up gesture while sharing his amazing smile. Bear is survived by his parents; one brother, Wayne of Union; grandparents, Tom and Ann Steele of Union, Sandra Hoxworth of Portland and Steve and Brenda Carter of Dundee. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Adrian. Wayne L. Cross, 64, formerly of Elgin, died May 5 at his home in Roseburg. Roseburg Memorial Gardens is in charge of arrangements. Wayne was born June 10, 1943, to Lloyd and Martha Cross. He was raised in Elgin and attended school there. In 1977, Wayne married Bonnie. The couple enjoyed camping, cooking and improving their home. He loved the outdoors. Wayne is survived by his wife, Bonnie; mother, Martha Cross of Elgin; three brothers, Ken Cross of Netarts, Don Cross of Tigard and Dennis Cross of Elgin; and sister, Rhonda Thomas of Newport, Wash. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Melanoma Foundation, 12395 El Camino Real, Suite 117, San Diego, Calif., 92130. Edith C. (Miller) Green, 105, of Joseph, died May 8 at Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise. She will be buried at Prairie Creek Cemetery, and a memorial service will be held later. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Edith was born Nov. 19, 1902, to Albert and Edith Miller in Minneapolis. Her mother died six months later, and Edith was raised by several aunts until the families moved to Long Beach, Calif. She graduated as valedictorian from Long Beach High in three years at the age of 16. At the same time, she played first violin in the Long Beach Symphony. She married Harland C. Green of Wilbraham, Mass., in 1921, and they made their home in Meriden, Conn. The couple moved back to California where Harland was the founder of Kelco Co. in San Diego. He preceded her in death in 1974. Not permitted a college education, she provided trust funds to her descendants and all of them are college graduates. Survivors include three children, Norman of San Rafael, Calif., Donald of Joseph and Dorothy Duncan of California City, Calif.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph United Methodist Church. |
