Reister, Cork, Hindman, Burgess

Nov. 15 — Eunice Reister, memorial service, 11 a.m., Enterprise Congregational Church

Nov. 19 — Roy Cork, memorial service, 1 p.m., Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation and Life Celebration Center


Reta June Hindman, 76, of Touchet, Wash., and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 12 at her home.

A funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Herring Funeral Home with the Rev. Marcia Mitchell of Amazing Grace Church of the Nazarene officiating. A reception will follow at the Nine Mile Ranch in Touchet. A private family burial will take place in Elgin.

Reta was born Jan. 24, 1932, in La Grande.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elgin Stampeders in care of Herring Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA 99362.


Beatrice June “Bea” Burgess, 77, of La Grande, died Nov. 4 at a local care center. A memorial service will be held next week. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.

Bea was born Aug. 21, 1931, to Frank and Emma (Owalla) Hutchings in Merced, Calif. She graduated from high school in Hollister, Calif., and married Joel C. Burgess on June 31, 1956, in Stevenson, Wash. She and her husband owned and operated the Imbler Café until selling it at the end of 1982.

Bea was a member of the Church of Christ and the Rebekah Lodge in Summerville. She loved hunting, fishing and gardening, especially her flowers. She loved to bake and she was known to many as the “Pie Lady.”

Survivors include her husband, Joel Burgess of La Grande; children, Peggy Ann Loften of Klamath Falls and Bruce Burgess of Palouse, Wash.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two brothers; one sister; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Bruce Burgess; and a daughter, Nancy Ruth.


Roy James Cork, 92, formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 11 in Portland. His memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande.

Roy was born June 14, 1916, in Hanska, Minn. He moved to Edgemont, S.D., when he was a small boy and went through grade school and high school there. After graduation he moved to Lusk, Wyo., where he worked with his brother Mike in a bakery.

He married Gayle Hargraves in 1937 and they moved to Hood River to be near his parents, Emma and L.L. Cork. In 1938 their only child, daughter Marlene Cork Howard, was born.

In 1938 they moved back to Lusk where they lived until Roy was drafted in the army during World War II.

After the war he and his wife and daughter moved to La Grande where he lived until 2002.

Roy worked for Eddy’s Bakery as a manager and truck driver deliveryman from 1942 until his retirement in 1968.

He joined La Grande First Christian Church in 1953 where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon.

He was a 64-year member of The Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M., La Grande Lodge No. 41 and a past Patron of Hope Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.

In 2002 he moved to the Reedwood Convalescent Home in Portland where he lived at the time of his death.

He is survived by his daughter, Marlene Cork Howard; a grandson and two granddaughters; many great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Gayle Cork; four sisters; and one brother.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church or to the building fund to make Colonyhouse in Rockaway Beach wheelchair accessible.
