Formerly of La Grande 1938-2011
Judith was born Feb. 18, 1938, to John M. and Eleanor Jean (Hawes) Hodge in La Grande. In 1957, she met Alan L. Coles. They married and had one child, Nora Elise. Alan and Judith spent 53 years together. Judith was involved in the Alter Society of La Grande. She was a member of the Starkey 4x4 Races and Meacham Volunteer Fire Department. She was a Meacham Quick Responder for many years. Those who knew her say Judith’s greatest joys in life were helping others and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Alan Coles; daughter and her husband, Nora (Coles) and Daniel Tauvell; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Linda Jean(Hodge) Smethurst and Nancy Jerene (Hodge) Laird.
Mina Irene Elliott Formerly of Union County 1919-2011
She was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Denver to Ernest Walter Howe and Marie Harsin. Irene lived in Cornucopia, Sparta and Baker City. She married Clarence Milton Elliott Sept. 13, 1939, in Weiser, Idaho. They lived in Medical Springs and Pondosa before moving to Union. She worked as a cook at several food establishments in La Grande and North Powder. She and her husband, Clarence, moved to the Hermiston area in 1975, where she was employed by J.R. Simplot before retiring. Irene enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting and fishing. Irene is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Dorman Sharp of Richland; daughters, Colleene Oelhafen of La Grande and Betty Gumbert of Hermiston; and son and daughter-in-law, Willard and Julie Elliott of Byers, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Elliott.
Viola M. West Formerly of La Grande 1931-2011 Viola Marie West, 80, of Coos Bay and formerly of La Grande, died Nov. 21. Cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory with inurnment at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum Columbarium at Coos Bay. Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel. Friends and family are encouraged to sign the on-line guestbook www.coosbayfh.com. She was born March 6, 1931, in La Grande to Clarence and Frances (Peck) Smith. Vi grew up in La Grande, graduating from high school in 1950. Vi met and later married Robert Lee West July 8, 1950, in La Grande. Viola helped Bob get through Eastern Oregon College of Education, and started raising their children, born in 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1955. The family moved to Coos Bay in 1954 where she worked in the crab and shrimp industry and Bob taught in the Coos Bay schools. She later worked at The Hub and Bon Marché. She always enjoyed her lunches with “The Hub Girls.” She loved cooking, canning and knitting. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bob West; son, Brett West; daughters, Doreen Dolan and her husband, Pat, and Lori Berge and her husband, Peter; son-in-law, Bill Cotton; brother, Clarence Campbell and his wife, Shirlee; sister, Norma Gooderham and her husband, Jerry; five grandsons; four granddaughters; six great-grandsons; and five great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence in 1961, and Frances in 1990; and her oldest daughter, Debra Cotton in 2003.
